alrighty, that's all we need :)
"will Charlotte, Allison, and Oliver please report to the principal's office." the intercom overhead during class change buzzed with the assistant principal's voice.
when the three got there, three desks stood in a row, equal distance apart. "your history teacher reported an unusual score on your tests, a perfect 100. usually, that would be good, but the teacher purposefully made this test almost impossible; he said he put questions he never taught on it. Now," the principal gestured towards the two people standing on either side of the door, in all white, with full faced masks on. "these two scientists are only here as a precaution. we will be retesting you, with a completely different test. good luck." He handed each of them a paper with their name on it. Oliver handed Allison hers, and they both sat down and started immediately. -
Charlotte grabbed the sheet and sat down. She looked at the page in front of her, thinking back to how she’d answered the last test. She was almost certain she’d only been able to answer correctly because of the countless hours she’d spent reading books in the library even after it closed. Her power, which no one except she knew about, allowed her to stay completely hidden from the security who ushered people out after the library had closed. The two scientists stayed completely still, their clean, white masks not moving once, as she scribbled her answers down with her pencil. They were worrying her, making her nervous, but she kept going, only occasionally looking up to catch a glimpse of the two siblings in the room.
-
after a while, Oliver stopped writing. Once Allison finished as well, Oliver grabbed both papers and handed them to the principal. Allison's paper had chicken scratch on it, almost illegible. Oliver's handwriting was neat and small. the scientists had no effect on him, yet Allison was shaking. Oliver hugged her to him, trying to calm her down. their mother was taken by scientists a few years ago, and it wasn't peaceful. they didn't know if their mother had even made it to.... wherever the scientists took the people. The scientists looked on in silence.
-
Charlotte finished her page shortly after, handing the principal her sheet, nodding her head lightly out of respect and waited to be excused. She showed no signs of the nerves she was feeling after having faced two of the scientists. Though it would be crazy to assume she wasn’t scared. Everyone had heard the stories of what happened to those who were taken away. Next to her, one of the twins consoled the other. She recognized them of course but couldn’t quite remember their names. Perhaps they were a year younger or older, she couldn’t really tell.
-
the principal ran the tests through the grading machine quickly, and the scientists and him looked over the three sheets, mumbling to each other. the principal looked up at the three as the two scientists left the room. "i'm sorry to say this, but, the scientists will have to take you away. you all had perfect hundreds again." the principal looked scared and saddened at the same time. Oliver looked up at him after a moment. "where are they taking us?" he asked. "only the scientists know. they tell no one." the principal gives them one last look before turning away. the scientists come back in with a few men in black suits, looking like bodyguards. "come with us." one scientist said, and a bodyguard each grabbed one of the kids. Oliver struggled, calling for Allison, who looked like she was shutting down on herself. she was compliant, the complete opposite of her struggling brother.
-
Charlotte pulled against the one who had approached her, shaking her arms in an attempt to break loose. If she could just get far enough to go invisible without raising suspicions she could get away. But it was no use, they had restrained them with silver bands holding their arms together, as they led them out, her dress dragging behind her. She looked at the other two again, making a face but trying not to say anything for fear that it would make her situation worse. The sister was completely out of it, she noticed so she turned to the brother who had not so much as uttered a word in her direction.
-
Oliver's given up on struggling at this point. they loaded the three into a van, with a partition between the back seats and the front seats. there were two rows of back seats, facing each other. Allison got in and curled up in the corner of one seat, Oliver right beside her.
the van started up, and they felt a jolt as the van started moving. after a moment, Oliver dared to speak. "any idea where they're taking us...?" -
“Not a clue.” She said quietly. She looked at both of them. They seemed extremely close to one another. They probably depended deeply on each other in a way that was foreign to her, who had grown up without siblings. “Hey, so I’m Charlotte.” She said, giving into the impossibility of the situation and trying to lighten the mood. “You don’t need to tell me who you are but we might as well since we’re all kind of in the same situation.” She said this as quietly as possible, trying her best to not cause any disturbance.
-
"i'm Oliver, this is Allison." he said after a pause. he looks out the window, and notices that they're going past the fence. there was a giant wall around the city, the government and scientists told them that it was because the whole world outside was a wasteland, and they were one of the few remaining cities left. the wall was put up to protect them from the monsters outside the city. the gates opened, and the van left the city. Oliver was shocked to see that there was no wasteland. it was completely green and fertile, everything perfect, just like in the city. "they lied to us..."
-
Charlotte stared out the window in awe of what was around her. She couldn’t believe it. Flowers sprouted from just about every patch of land and trees hung about, their long branches nearly touching the ground. It was nothing like how they’d explained it to them in school. She tried to regain her composure as she faced the twins “Twins right?” She asked trying not to think about where they were going. “You two must be close right?”
-
Oliver paused as Allison told him telepathically what Charlotte had said. "yeah. we literally could not live without each other." he grins as if he just told an inside joke, and Allison gives a small smile. she seemed to be calming down a bit. she closed her eyes as Oliver relayed everything he was seeing to her through his mind. she looked at peace for the first time today.
-
“That’s really cool, not to mention you guys look like near copies of each other.” Charlotte ran her fingers through her hair, despite the silver metal adorning her hands, a habit she had picked up when she was nervous about something. She let herself get lost in the smooth movement of the vehicle as it drive along open stretches of greenery. She wondered where her prents were, what they’d be thinking now that their only daughter was missing. Surely the school would have told them something, if anything at all. Would they even care that she was gone?
-
after a while, the fields of green turned into walls of cement, buildings after buildings. the van came to another gate, and the guards on top of the fence opened the gate. the partition between the back seats and the front opened, and a scientist spoke. "we're almost there. we sent a message via port to your parents about what happened. they're being greatly compensated for this." the scientist closed the partition as the van rolled to a stop. the doors were opened, and Oliver shielded his eyes from the bright light, and grabbed Allison's hand so she didn't fall when she stepped out. he looked up, and noticed they were in front of a giant white building. Bodyguards surrounded them and herded them inside, the scientists in front. the first room was a hallway, with two doors at each end. one was marked "CAFETERIA." and the other "ROOMS." the door straight ahead was marked "LABS." Oliver feared what was on the other side of that door.
-
Charlotte looked around, the place was empty, save for the guards who stood by the scientists, who looked at the three of them, waiting and analyzing every one of their steps. She walked closer to the twins, standing just behind them, the silver cuffs now becoming uncomfortable from being on so long. “LABS” written across the wall did nothing to calm her mind that was all over the place, where were they and what would they need from them? Had they somehow found out about her ability? There was no way they could sinply from her test grades. She clenched and unclenched her hands, following closely behind.
-
one scientist used a key card to open the 'LABS' door. they came to another hallway, and on one side, a door with the word 'OFFICE.' was written. the door was open, and a woman sat at the desk, typing on her computer. when she noticed the group, she closed the computer. "oh, come in." the scientists and bodyguards herded the three inside, and the woman waved the adults back out. "I'd like to talk to them in private please." they left with a small amount of hesitation.
"you're probably wondering why you were taken." the woman turned to the three. "now, in this society we scientists created, we strive to make sure everyone fits in; those you don't... well, think of it as a puzzle." she holds up two puzzle pieces. they look like they're from different sets. "as you can see, these two don't fit together. now, this one fits with these here," she put one in one of the almost finished puzzles on the table. "but this one still doesn't. it goes in the other. you get it now?" she smiled. "we're going to run some tests, and then put you in a different society we've created, one that fits your abilities more. probably one a bit more academically challenging, or something like that."
