Connor inhaled shakily, leaning forward and burying his face in his chest. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to scare you-“ He spoke, his hands trembling. “I- I don’t want to scare people anymore-“

“Hey, you’ve been doing really well, though,” Evan said softly. “You were just trying to protect me-“

“But I still lashed out- I thought I was doing better,” Connor mumbled, exhaling shakily.

“You are.” Evan said softly. “You can have slip-ups. You haven’t had one in so long-“

Connor exhaled shakily, hugging onto Evan. “I’m sorry…”

“It’s okay,” Evan whispered, holding him close and rubbing Connor’s back.

Connor exhaled softly, leaning into his touch and burying his face in his chest again.

“It’s okay,” Evan repeated quietly, rubbing his back.

Connor nodded a little, leaning into Evan’s touch.

“Let’s go home, okay? I’ll- I’ll drive,” Evan said softly.

Connor nodded, standing and letting go of Evan. He handed him the keys, running a hand through his hair.

Evan took them, hopping into the car and starting it. “I’m sorry you’re so upset,” he said to Connor, offering his hand.

“It’s okay,” Connor said softly, taking Evan’s hand. “I just- Feel like I’ve taken three steps backwards…”

“Well, let’s keep walking forward away from that, then,” Evan said soft, pulling out of the parking lot.

Connor nodded, gently squeezing Evan’s hand.
