“If it makes him a criminal, that I pardon him and his actions,” Briar said, trying to keep his voice steady. “Now, if you’ll excuse me,” he muttered, turning back to the man he was talking to.
-
Lawrence watched Briar for a moment. He squeezed his hand under the table and glanced at Alador, who was scowling, but sat back down. He figured the man had no argument against the king.
-
The meeting soon came to an end and Briar sighed, leaning back in his chair for a moment. He sat back up and watched the members standing and leaving for a moment, looking over at his father. “I don’t appreciate how you’re speaking about Lawrence, Father.”
-
Alador glared. ‘I will speak about this man however I like, son. He murdered my wife, your mother. His family has been our rivals for generations, and you have the audacity to tell me, you don’t appreciate how I’m speaking about him?’
-
“Yes, I do,” Briar spoke, glaring back at his father, “because he’s my- my friend. And I do not care about what he did in the past, because he never meant it to happen. People make mistakes, Father. And- and Mother always told me, told us to be forgiving! I don’t get how that’s so hard for you!”
-
‘Don’t try to fool me. I saw you two 2 years ago in your room. What would the public think of this? Your mother certainly wouldn’t like the man who murdered her being your boyfriend! Especially when you’re married!’ Alador argued.
-
“I never ducking asked to get married!” Briar shouted, anger in his voice as he clenched his free hand into a fist. “And don’t you f---ing say that, you know damn well Mother isn’t like that- She doesn’t hold grudges and hate people until the end of time just because of their mistakes!” He slammed his fist against the table, looking away from his father. “I do not care what you have to say about our relationship, because I love him and he loves me, and that’s all that matters.”
-
Alador was stunned into silence for a moment. He’d never witnessed such an outburst from his son. ‘You listen you me, you insolent boy-‘
‘I think that’s enough,’ Lawrence snapped at Briar’s father. He rested his hand on top of Briar’s fist and wrapped an arm around him, trying to comfort his boyfriend. ‘Let’s go, love. It’s not worth it, okay?’ he said softly into Briar’s ear.
‘Briar, we need to talk about this. In private,’ Alador said, shooting Lawrence a glare. -
“No. I’m done listening to your bulls---,” Briar spoke, exhaling softly. “I don’t want to be bothered by you the rest of the day, understood?” He spoke, standing to his feet.
-
Alador scowled, but didn’t respond. He stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Lawrence gently rubbed Briar’s shoulder with his thumb. ‘Hun, are you okay?’
-
Briar exhaled shakily, leaning into Lawrence’s arms. “Not really, no,” he muttered and shook his head, covering his face with his hands.
-
Lawrence sat both of them down, holding Briar close. ‘Do you want to talk about it?’ he asked softly, one arm around Briar, the other gently caressing the back of his neck.
-
“No, I- I just wanna lay down,” Briar murmured, squeezing his eyes shut as he hugged onto Lawrence.
-
‘Ok, that’s okay. Um, do you want to go back to your bedroom? Or we can stay here for a bit?’ Lawrence asked softly, gently rubbing his back.
-
“I wanna go up to my room,” Briar replied, rubbing his face with his hand. He let go of Lawrence and stood, exhaling softly. He looked over at his boyfriend, holding out his hand for him to take.
