She sits in quiet contemplation on the edge of the rooftop of some office building. The sirens in the distance assure her that the police know she's here, and she has to leave before they get here, but they always seem to move so slowly, and this particular night is just so fantastic. She closes her eyes for a moment and lets the cold night air caress her face.
-
He stands behind her, arms folded, expression calm, possibly too relaxed in light of the murder he'd just been an accomplice to.
"Everyone's in the car. Are we going?" -
She smiled faintly and got up, turning to face him.
"I guess so." -
"Are you mopey tonight?"
-
"Wow, rude." she jokes as she walks past him to head for the stairs. "I'm just kinda out of it."
-
He rolls his eyes and follows.
There are many stories to this building, and when he looks over the railing, it's hard to make out the bottom. -
Without missing a beat, she hoists herself up and over the edge of the railing, catching onto the next set on the next floor down before jumping off it and catching herself again by the railing a few more floors down.
-
He mimics her movements closely, and together they descend the stairs quickly.
-
When her feet finally land on solid tile on the bottom floor of the stairwell, something immediately feels off. Well. More off than a standard crime scene.
She holds a hand up to draw her son's attention.
"Mask on." she hisses. -
He lands with heavy footfall a second before she speaks, wincing at the loud sound it makes before quickly pulling his mask down off his head and securing it to his face.
-
She doesn't miss the loud impact of his boots hitting the tile, and, bracing for a fight, she quickly pulls her own mask up from around her neck and covers her face.
She heads for the door with an air of confidence regardless of their disadvantage, wasting no time in opening the door and stepping through. -
She aims her gun the moment her target steps through the door. Her partner does the same.
"Stop right there!" she commands, voice firm. -
She stops just within the doorframe, disappointed but not surprised. Of course things couldn't have been easy, and if this took too long, the other children would be coming back to see where they were.
She raises her hands up next to her head, smiling charmingly at the young woman. -
Except Lainey couldn't see. Because she was wearing a mask.
