She couldn't sleep. It was too cold that it would be dangerous to fall unconscious without a thick eiderdown, or a fire to keep warm, or at least a blanket. But Frieda had none of those things. She pulled her damp coat closer to her, looking through her bag for food. She had none.
'Hitler is a pig,' Frieda muttered, standing. 'Hitler is a swine.' She trudged through the wet snow, walking backwards to avoid her footprints being tracked. It made sense when her teachers had told her this, but now it felt silly. -

Jack knew that he was lost the second he couldn’t see the rest of his group that was helping to look for people running away from the war. The snowfall from earlier made it worse, and now he couldn’t retrace his steps, so he just kept moving forward. He also knew that he would eventually see someone, whether it would be the enemy, someone from his group, or some of the German civilians that they were looking for.
“Bloody hell, it’s cold.” The young black-haired soldier muttered to himself, a slight British accent visible in his voice. He was wearing long sleeves, but it didn’t help much with the cold air blowing at his face. As he was thinking to himself, he stopped abruptly, spotting someone walking around in the distance. -
She spotted a dark silhouette in the distance, and immediately ducked behind a tree. Frieda could tell they weren't German because of the nice, fresh-looking clothing. Germans, since the war started, weren't allowed new, fresh clothing.
Frieda, closed her eyes. If they were going to shoot her, she didn't want to see the blood. She made a small squeaking sound (she always did when she was scared), then slapped her hands over her mouth. -
He watched the person for a few moments, slowly approaching so that he didn’t scare them any more than he probably already has. As he got a bit closer, he could notice that it was a girl around his age, maybe a bit younger, and she looked like she had been living out here for a while. “Uh, sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” Jack said to her in a more monotone voice, rubbing his neck. Frankly, he was relieved it was just a German girl and not an enemy, because he didn't feel like dying.
-
Frieda opened her eyes, staring at the English boy in front of her. She bit her bottom lip. Luckily, English was her second language (her first was German, obviously), so she could probably negotiate her way out of being shot.
'That's OK,' she said quietly, shuffling nervously from foot to foot. -
-
He shifted his gaze away from her, glancing around at the area around them and trying to think of something to say. He ended up with his eyes back on the girl in front of him. “Are…you alright? You look like you’ve been out here a while. I mean- I guess that would make sense, but…sorry.” Jack rambled, taking a step back awkwardly. He felt a twinge of guilt, but at that point, it was a normal feeling.
-
Frieda tilted her head at him. She didn't quite understand his stuttering. 'I...' she said, trying to think of what to say. She chewed her bottom lip, mainly to ease that nagging hunger in her stomach. She eyed his gun cautiously, then said, 'I have. Been out here a while, I mean.'
