IMO The idea of giving a character trauma solely to make them interesting is stupid.
Why: It's a bit cliché, for starters, and it gives off the vibe of those people who make [insert random thing here] their whole personality.
There are more ways to make someone interesting than just trauma, my guys.
Again, just my opinion. -
that's fair, but I don't know too many people that aren't teenagers that give characters trauma for no other reason than to make them more interesting
for instance: I give characters trauma either to explore an aspect of my own trauma and the different ways it could have cultivated, or to explain a character trait I've already decided the character has, to give it more depth. -
oh ok

I just read this to my gf to see if what I said makes sense and she made a valid point as well: most people in real life have experienced trauma in some form or another. it's not always about making them more interesting, but about adhering to reality. the world is traumatic. people die, people get sick, people are attacked, hated and abused. it's a lot more common than anyone likes.
-
i know that, but i'm specifically referring to people who do it to make characters more interesting
-
valid, just wanted to express my thoughts on the subject. how do you know when someone does it for that reason? do they tell you, or do you just assume?
-
eh, i've just heard that some people do it so i felt like bringing it up

I think there are times where past-trauma will work with a character. But when the reader feels like the character's trauma is only existing to make them into a more "interesting" character, is when it's bad.
But I agree with the point that real-life people experience trauma, so therefore, it's alright to give a character some traumatic experience.
This is just my own thought on the matter, but I think it's way more interesting if the character with said trauma is still going through it, or coping with the aftershocks or consequences of it. -
I agree that when trauma is the only thing that makes a character interesting, it can be incredibly annoying. However when done right, it can turn out well! But generally yeah, if you're gonna traumatize a character, the way to make your readers feel it harder is if they SEE it. Taking a relatable character, someone who's like them, and watching them go through a traumatic event is WAY more compelling than just "her house died three years ago".
