"What was her name?" Karl asked.
"You gotta get up, George." Clay said a little louder. -
"Adela, or something like that," Nick said.
"No," George whined, stuffing his face into the pillow. -
"Oh, pretty!" Karl said. He looked at the counter in confusion. "I just had the sunscreen. It was right here." He mumbled.
"Yes," Dream whined back. "C'mere." He said as he grabbed George by the waist and pulled him over into a hug. -
"Is it in the backpack?" Sapnap asked.
George made a noise of protest but didn't make any moves against it. -
Karl opened the backpack and looked inside. "Nope. Could it be in the car?"
"Mine now." Clay teased. He was doing his best to get his friend to smile. -
"Could be, Nick said with a nod, heading over to the door. "I'll go check."
George didn't smile, if anything it made him feel worse. The simple phrase reminded him of the night Matthew forced him to go to bed, and took away any screens so they could cuddle and appreciate the quality time. What had changed? And when? -
Karl nodded and looked around the kitchen for his phone.
"Talk to me," Clay whispered. -
Nick headed outside, humming a quiet tune as he opened the passenger seat door and started to search.
George shook his head, refusing once again. He usually wouldn't, but right now his head was racing and he couldn't exactly put it in words. -
"Please." Clay quietly begged. "It'll help, I promise."
-
"I can't," George whispered
-
"Yes, you can." Clay paused for a moment. "If you want to become full, let yourself be empty. If you want to be reborn...let yourself die. Lao Tzu. Older quote, I think."
-
"The hell does that mean?" George said quietly.
-
"Sometimes we're hurt and broken. S*** happens that screws us over. But you have to let yourself break down and have weak moments if you want to keep going and be stronger. You have to let yourself spiral into the chaos and confusion in order to find any sort of clarity." Clay replied. "Let yourself be open."
-
George waited for a few beats, trying to think straight. "Matthew was right in that video," He whispered. "I want him back. I miss him."
-
"He doesn't deserve you, and if you go back you know what'll happen," Clay said softly.
