Dahlia bit the inside of her cheek, her brows furrowed. She wanted to absolutely refuse his offer and turn around with a dignified huff, but boredom was eating away at her. She eventually caved in, nodding silently. Maybe some opportunity for escape would arise.
-
Nickola nodded. "Good," he said. He opened the door farther, almost mimicking a doorman for Dahlia. When she exited the room, he closed the door and began walking. "Would you like something to entertain yourself for later? Perhaps some books or crafts or something of the sort?"
-
Dahlia hugged herself, keeping as far of a distance from Nickola as she could. Her gray eyes were troubled and angry, like a storm. She bristled at his comments, taking them as some sort of belittling insult. "I don't want anything of yours," she replied coldly. "I want nothing to do with you. Haven't I made that clear?"
-
Something flashed inside Nickola for a split second before he seemed to calm himself, needing no outside urging. "More time," he murmured to himself. "You simply need more time."
-
Dahlia shot him an icy look as she heard him mumble something under his breath, looking around to have something to do. "Where am I?"
-
"I think you'll enjoy the walk better if we move outside," Nickola said, guilding Dahlia towards the grand wooden front doors. He unlocked it, and opened the door for her.
On the outside there were gardens with fruits and vegetables and herbs and flowers and trees. There were stone paths that led you around the vast yard filled with beautiful plants. But there was also a high fence with barbed wire, and also security guards stationed at various posts. -
Dahlia hated to admit it, but the garden was beautiful. Yet the barbed wire fence and armed guards brought her back to reality. "If you expect me to enjoy anything while you're around, you'd be sadly mistaken." Her heartbeat raced at her own haughty tone, but she had to say them. Even if it cost her.
-
Dahlia's words were like icy stabs to his heart. He loved her, he didn't want her to see him that way. But she was starting to push him over the edge with how resistant she was.
"I don't expect you to adjust right away," Nickola said. "But this is your life now. You need to learn to accept it." -
Dahlia snapped, whipping around to face him with her fists clenched. "This is not my life! You took me away from my real life."
-
"I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have to," Nickola said, his tone growing harsh. "It doesn't seem to be something you're capable of understanding, that your life is in danger and that I am protecting you."
-
"I was perfectly safe until you came into my life!" Dahlia shot back, pointing an accusing finger at him. Her gaze burned into his, unwilling to back down. "I didn't ask for this. You didn't give me a choice!"
-
"You can't help who you fall in love with," Nickola said. His eyes burned at her. "Let's go inside now, shall we?" he said in a curt, almost hissing tone.
-
"Fine," Dahlia bit out, seething. She hugged herself, glaring at the garden. Perfect flowers growing neatly in a row caught her eye. She brushed her fingers against a blooming white rose, feeling its smoothness.
-
"Must I drag you back inside?" Nickola said. He noticed her dawdling and was glaring at her for it. He took note of the flower she was holding, however, wondering what it meant to her.
-
She withdrew her hand from the rose, her emotional walls defensively rising up to shut him out. Her gaze grew steely and her expression hardened, putting her hands back into her pockets. "There'll be no need for any of that." She walked past him, her posture stiff.
