Ravius was reclining in a chair at a quaint little café, under the pretense of reading the newspaper. Intrusive thoughts slipped in and out of his mind. As he stared at the back of a man's head, he realized how easily he could kill him. And why didn't he? It wouldn't be all that hard. But then again, he was here for a reason. He tried to focus on the paper.
-
Wren was walking past a cafe, her medium-length light brown curls bouncing slightly as she walked with a notebook and pencil in hand. She was wearing a light yellow dress and a jean jacket and sandals. It was the middle of summer.
-
Ravius peeked over his paper when he saw her. She was the perfect image of Harriet, from her lovely brown curls to her slim and neat figure. He stared at her for a moment, before quickly averting his eyes. He didn't want to draw her attention, not yet.
-
There was a park nearby that Wren was headed to. She reached her destination and sat on a park bench. She opened her notebook in mindless thought. Should she write or draw? Her notebook was full of a mixture of the two.
-
Ravius watched Wren with what seemed to be an innocent curiosity, but was secretly something far more sinister. She was the one, he knew. No one else would be the better replica of the very thing he had lost. But how to catch her?
-
Wren swiveled herself around so that she was laying on her stomach propped up on her elbows, making sure to tuck her skirt into her legs because of the breeze that was blowing by. She just started making random doodles until inspiration came to her.
-
Ravius let the newspaper fly out of his hands, swirling into the wind and making pronounced rustling noises. After a moment, he chased after it, hoping to get closer to the girl without arousing suspicion.
-
Wren saw a white something out of the corner of her eye fluttering towards her. She turned her head and saw a man chasing after his newspaper. It flew to the bench. Wren took it before it could fly off again and stood up, walking over to the man.
-
Ravius gratefully smiled at Wren, hardly believing his luck. "Thank you, miss! I don't have a particularly strong grip so that happens more that I'd like to admit. To whom do I owe my gratitude?"
-
"Wren," she said, holding out her hand with a smile.
-
Ravius shook it firmly. Her hand was small but sturdy, easy to crush if he wanted to. He released her hand before intrusive thought and impulse got the better of him. "Wren is a rather lovely name! What brings you outside today?"
-
She shrugged. "I just don't like being cooped up in the house," Wren said. She held his newspaper out to him. "How about you?"
-
Ravius took his newspaper back with a grateful and acknowledging nod. "People-watching," he said with a shrug. It was the most honest thing he had said all day. "I like to come up with stories about them in my mind."
-
Wren nodded. "I do that sometimes, but not often," she said. She felt her phone buzz in her jacket pocket. She pulled it out and quickly glanced at it to see who it was.
It was her mom. "Excuse me," she said to the man and pressed the little green button. She drifted a few yards away from the man, talking with her mother. -
Ravius watched Wren in an analytic manner. How would he take her? Should he wait and befriend her? Or should he find some way to get her alone? He didn't know.
