Kenna got an idea. "Do we have any left over rope?" she asked Lilac.

"Yeah, over there," Lilac said, jerking her head to the side briefly. Ander was trying to clamp the thing's muzzle shut, but it got so white hot it burned his hands.

Kenna grabbed it as quick as possible. "Trip it or muzzle it?" she yelled the question to everyone.

"I think the rope would burn, so trip it!" Ander suggested, momentarily distracted. The beast scooped him up and tossed him aside.

Kenna stared worriedly at Ander for a few moments before she came back to her senses. "Hold this end and don't let go, no matter what" Kenna said handing Lilac one of the ends. "Crypta hurry up!" Kenna yelled as she went around the beast, trying her best not to get singed, but failing. The rope was now around the front of the creature's legs.

Lilac braced herself and held the rope tightly. Ander winced and got up, pain rippling through his body. Crypta typed, a panicked expression on her face. "I'm trying!" she said in a high-pitched voice. "They changed the override code for Proto!"

Kenna moved the rope up so that it was at the beast's chest instead of the legs. That way they'd be able to hold it back from moving forward.

The beast began to thrash around wildly, straining at the rope. Lilac dug her feet into the ground, plowing up dirt as she was slowly being dragged forward. Ander helped hold the rope as Crypta frantically tried to find the right code.

"We can't hold it much longer!" Kenna told Crypta. "You need to hurry!"

"Okay, okay!" Crypta said, her voice becoming increasingly high-pitched. The beast's jaws started to bubble with magma. Just as it reared its head back to spray, its eyes went dim and it sunk to its knees.

Kenna dropped the rope in relief. Her hands were a little bloody from gripping the rope so right. Ander fared much worse than her. She went over to him. "Are you ok?" she asked.

"Honestly? No," Ander said. "But will I be? Yes, eventually."
Crypta's hands were shaking as she slid off of the beast. Lilac caught her with a grunt. -
"I'm sorry," Kenna said a little quieter than her normal volume. "I'm sorry for everything."

Ander took Kenna by her shoulders. "Don't say that. None of this was your fault."

"I feel like it is, though," Kenna explained. "Almost everything has been done for me. So that I might live to see another day. And everyone is putting their lives on the line for me. I feel like that one girl in badly written stories. All she's doing is nearly getting killed by the bad guys while everyone else is doing everything they can to save her and she doesn't do anything to contribute. I feel like...if I wasn't alive right now you guys would be having the same life you had before you met me. At least you wouldn't be getting your clone or a big metal animal, or anything sent after you."
