Avalon soon got the upper hand in the fight and pinned the drow to the ground. He got ready to use his hypnotic eyes when he looked and saw the fear in the eyes of the drow. The drow looked dead scared of him when just a moment ago he was trying to kill him. Avalon got off but kept his tail wrapped round the drow. He spoke some Latin which is the language spoken by drows and said "You are afraid?" When the drow looked at him with a confused look, he repeated in English. The drow then said "Yes, I am. I don't wanna die proving who I am." Avalon sympathized with the drow and said "Well, let me put you down and we can talk." The drow said "How do I know you won't kill me?" Avalon said "I have you in my tail. If I wanted to kill you, I'd do it right now by crushing you." "Point taken." The drow said and then he said "Okay, let's talk." Avalon then put the drow down on the log he was sitting on and released him.
-
Avalon got on the log and asked "So what is your name?" The drow answered "Dorvakin Khel." Avalon said "Okay, Dorvakin, my name is Avalon. What's this about trying to prove who you are?" Darvakin said "I was told by some village elders that in order to stay in their tribe, I must slay a beast and bring back it's corpse. Nagas are the most prized so I wanted to find one and kill it. You were the first I've seen." Avalon said "Okay, let me ask a different question. Have you killed a naga before?" Dorvakin answered "No, that's why I tried to ambush you with just a knife. I thought maybe I could get a lucky shot." Avalon said "You almost did. Why do they want you to prove your acceptance in the first place? I thought all drows were welcome." Darvakin said "Not an outsider."
-
Avalon asked "What do you mean?" Dorvakin answered "I was not born the way most of my kind are. Before I explain, I must talk about something drows hate more than nagas. They're called high elves and our two races have been warring since the beginning of time. I don't know but despite all of that, I was adopted by a high elf woman. She said she found me abandoned and until five months ago, I thought I was a high elf with an odd color because she raised me." Avalon said "Then what happened?" Dorvakin said "They found out I was a drow and they cast me out. After five months of traveling I found a village of drows and I had to kill a beast to join them. And that's how we got here."
-
Avalon said "You don't look any older than me. Why would they send you on this quest?" Dorvakin said "It's what they do to all outsiders. Either come back with proof of your worth or don't come back at all." Avalon then asked "Do you want to prove anything? Will you be happy with them?" "What kind of question is that? Why wouldn't I?" Dorvakin retorted. Avalon said "Because, being raised as something else can make you reluctant to join something else. Are you truly sure that you would want to join the drow?" Dorvakin stayed silent as he tried to answer this question.
-
Dorvakin thought long and hard but couldn't give a good answer to Avalon. He said "I have to go. Goodbye, Avalon." Dorvakin took his arrow out of the tree and gave Avalon his fish back before he left. Avalon watched him and knew he would see him again sometime. He then ate his fish and went straight to sleep.
-
Avalon woke up the next morning and continued on his quest. He slithered for a while until he got out of the forest and to the mountain range the plant he needed to cure Embla. It seemed hard but he knew he had to help Embla, so he began climbing up the mountain.
-
Avalon climbed for what seemed like hours, going higher and higher in the air. This journey was starting to get more and more treacherous as the mountain got steeper. However, Avalon pressed on to get that plant. While climbing, the memory of the drow he had encountered last night never left him. He had hoped Dorvakin was okay but he seemed a little angry when he left, so he wasn't sure.
-
He had escalated up the mountain to the tallest peak. It was here he was to find the plant to make Embla feel better. The plant in question was green and purple and emitted a calming smell when a stressed out individual was near it. This would be helpful as a plant similar to it was highly poisonous and easy to mistake for the healing one. The only difference was it made no scent.
-
Avalon had finally mad it to the top to get the plant. But when he got there, it was gone. Someone had stolen the plant right out of the ground, roots and everything. He sighed because now he had to return with his mission failed and Embla would now die with nothing to help her. This made Avalon cry as he made the long trip back down the mountain.
-
Avalon finally made it down when he was ambushed by an entire group of drows. They tied him down to a pole and began to carry him away. He screamed for help but they gagged his mouth to stop it. Just as it seemed he was about to get taken away, mysterious arrows came flying out of no where. The drow began to panic as arrows kept killing them one by one. When one was left, he ran. Avalon stayed on the ground amid the dead bodies, still tied to the pole. Out of the bushes, Dorvakin came and untied Avalon.
-
Dorvakin helped Avalon up and said "I have just committed a huge sin of my people. Helping a naga. But I don't care, you gave me a chance, now I wish to give one to you." He pulled out a pot with the exact plant Avalon needed. Dorvakin gave it to him and said "I must go now. I will start a new populace, for all elves, not just drows. Farewell, Avalon. May we meet again." and with that Dorvakin was gone.
-
Avalon hurried back to the naga village, plant in tow to help Embla. Once he got there, the village doctor took the plant and worked on the medicine for Embla. Once completed, Avalon was instructed to give her one small dose every night. Unfortunately, despite Avalon's best efforts and the medicine, Embla's health deteriorated and eventually, she died. Avalon was absolutely devastated at this and cried throughout the whole funeral service.
-
After the service, Padral had to decide what to do with Embla's position. However, no one in Nagasia was old enough to take the position. The oldest was about 45 and they needed an elder. Avalon then came to him and offered to do it, but he was denied. Avalon wanted the position to honor his friend and kept trying for the best part of a month to convince Padral to let him be the trainer of newblood the village. Padral finally accepted and that became Avalon's official job within the village.
-
Several years later, Avalon had turned 21 and was not currently training any newcomers as they hadn't come by for a while. One day, he decided to fish along the river again for something to eat. As he fished for a while, he saw a large mass coming toward the hook. He thought it was a fish but it had an odd shape. Just then, the mass splashed it's tail and soaked Avalon. As he tried to dry his face, the mass revealed itself to be Lenore, laughing as she brought herself to shore.
