Rowena
Rowena gathered everyone and they started on the trail again. She led in the front beside Quill, but as the trail became thinner she had to position herself behind him instead. "Why is the trail made like this?" She asks.
"T-To stop carriages and groups like us who are dumb enough to try and f-find the wizard." Quill responded simply. Rowena doesn't like it, but there was nothing she could do to widen the trail. She used a bit of fae magic to move the trees out of their path so atleast it alleviated some of the difficulty. -
Gwen
After Rowena's question about the path, a few awkward and silent minutes went by. "Sooooo," Gwen said, "What's the Moon Elf Clan, huh? MEC?" She asked Quill. She was behind Rowena in the order, so she only raised her voice as much as she needed to.
"Why should I tell ya? You d-don't even l..like m-me," Quill responded.
"My distaste for you doesn't mean I'm not curious about you."
"Okay then why d-don't we trade a s-secret f-for a secret."
"Deal!"
"Deal."
Gwen thought about a good secret worth telling before finally saying, "This black dagger that I have has been passed down in my family for generations. The hilt is witchcrafted so that only the hands of a Vanshire may wield it. The black metal center is stygian iron, and it's tipped with the carvings from a lich's bone. It was dipped in the fountain of woe and forged from the fires of Hell." Gwen said.
"...Okay, and? Where's the secret part?" Quill said boredly, twisting one of his arrows with disinterest.
"I was getting to that," Gwen said, taking out her knife. She whispers something and it elongates into a blade. "If you aim this weapon, intending to strike a creature's heart, it will turn into a sword. You can also make it into a sword by saying it's command words- which is the secret I'll impart to you. To all of you. The words are Blut für Klinge, an old saying in dwarvish. It means Blood for Blade." When Gwen finished her spiel she glanced back at Ma'Tonzi, who was looking at her with wide eyes. -
Jord
"...What happens if someone who's not a Vanshire weilds the blade?" Asks Jord in quiet astonishment, who was behind Gwen. Gwen smiled, like she was expecting the question. "Imagine the greatest pain you've ever felt, then multiply it tenfold... And that's only for the first minute or so. If said person still held the blade they'd eventually die and their soul would get eaten by the blade."
"Eaten?" Jord croaked out, terrified. He slowed his pace a bit so that he wasn't as close to Gwen. "Yes. It's happened once or twice all these years that it's been passed down. If you put the blade up to your ear you can sometimes still hear their screaming." Gwen suddenly sheathed the weapon. "This is a very dangerous item. If one of you were to get close to it I'd cry out and push you away immediately. I may dislike half of you, but I'd never wish that fate on anyone," Gwen said solemnly, glancing at Ma'Tonzi again. -
Ma'Tonzi
Ma'Tonzi couldn't stop staring at Gwen. So the fiasco from earlier was just for Ma'Tonzi's protection? She suddenly felt foolish for being so angry and overreacting at Gwen's violent behavior.
Ma'Tonzi flew over to Gwen, patted her on the head as a sign of good will, then flew back to Jord.
"Anymore pr-properties of the knife you want to t-tell us?" Quill asked, stuttering hard throughout this whole conversation for some reason.
Gwen shook her head. "There's more, but none that I necessarily need to share right now. Your turn for the telling." -
Quill
Quill sighed. He knew that they deserved answers if he was going to lead them on their journey. "Well, the Moon Elf Clan is a group of dark elves. Also known as the Night Knights.. Also known as my home. Where I grew up. Where my f-family probably still is... right now," Quill said.
Rowena asked, "But you're not a dark elf, are you?"
Quill shook his head no. "I'm half d-dark elf and half wood elf, b-but I've mostly taken on the f-features of my father. I- umm.. I prefer not t-talking about it anymore if that's o-okay.." Quill said, trailing off. Rowena nodded in understanding. -
Faber
"Blut für klinge," Faber whispered, testing the words on their lips. She liked the sound of it. Maybe in the future they'd scream it during battle, or whisper it to an enemy that Faber had already befallen, an enemy who needed one more good hit before stilling forever. A prayer. A war cry. An apology.
Faber still knew not about the small fairy and the pink haired boy, but Faber knew that Quill was a skilled fighter. They knew the fae girls were weaponry experts. If the group wasn't careful, Faber might actually start to like them. -
Rowena
Rowena leaned down to Quill while they were walking and whispered, "Tell me if you need a break, you seem nervous." Rowena said. Quill shook his head no, but the movement was too quick, too jerky. Rowena could tell that something was wrong. She needed to distract him, get him to talk about something else lest he have a panic attack...
Rowena had only witnessed it once. They were in the library. They'd known each other and been friends for awhile, but Quill still held so many secrets and mysteries. "Why do you quake so much, Quill?" She'd asked. Quill didn't answer right away, but Rowena patiently waited, knowing that he wasn't ignoring her. He looked at her calmly.
"I'm in a constant state of existential crisis. Dread creeps into my thoughts at every turn, and if I let my guard down for a second I know when I look up again the world will have shifted. Everything's too fast. I know secrets no man should ever know, and to deal with all that dreaded knowledge I move. I mutter. I scratch, I fidget. If I'm focused on the physical world then maybe I won't find myself lost in the mental one," Quill drunk a sip of tea. Rowena was wide-eyed. It was more than Quill had ever spoken.
Rowena didn't know how to respond to Quill's decisive moment of vulnerability. For a few minutes she just sat across from him, her mouth opening and closing like a fish as she floundered for words. Then she simply stood up, walked around the table, and gave him a hug. He stiffened. Then, after a few seconds he started shaking. Quill pushed her away, stood up, walked to a corner and didn't say anything. He just shook violently. Rowena worried she'd down something wrong. Later Quill reassured her that it wasn't her fault, it was just a fault of hers. Whatever that meant. Atleast he wasn't mad at her.
Flash back to the present. "Can you tell me about .. uhh... the wildlife in this forest?" Rowena asked, knowing that whatever topic she brought up Quill could intelligently drone about for hours, but she wanted to offer one that could interest her a bit. "Of course. Along the path I saw monstera pinnata, a scientific name for..." Quill started talking incessantly, filling the silence. -
Gwen
After a few hours of walking and Quill talking, they finally reached a point where the area was clear enough to settle down a camp. Gwen smiled when they got into the area, and pulled out a little box from her pocket.
"You guys are gonna love this," Gwen says. She whispers an incantation into the cube, and it unfurls and gets bigger until it's a rectangular four-sided tent. "Mi casa tu casa," She says, bowing. -
Jord
Jord widens his eyes at the contraption, looking very impressed. "This isn't, like, dipped in dragon blood or something like that, right? We can sleep in it and it won't be really bad for us like your dagger?" Jord asks Gwen. She laughs. "It's fine!" Gwen says, and to show as an example she opened a flapped and climbed inside it herself.
Jord hesitantly follows suit. -
Ma'Tonzi
Ma'Tonzi waves goodbye to Jord and flies to the top of the rectangular tent. She settled on an area and decided that she wouldn't mind sleeping under the stars. However, Ma'Tonzi was pretty sure they were gonna eat first so after finding the sweet spot she returned to the others. -
Quill
Quill grunts at the sight of the tent. "I can do magic too," he says to Rowena and Faber as he takes out a vial of a swirly yellow liquid. He finds a good spot a little ways away from the tent and then throws it onto the ground. As it shatters the liquid forms into a campfire, logs and all. -
Faber
"A campfire potion? Are you an alchemist too?" Faber asks Quill with surprise. They had to hold back from saying 'what can't you do? Fighting prowess, smarts, and magical knowledge?! A true jack of all trades!' because Faber didn't want to give out that many compliments. -
Rowena
Rowena clapped at her sister's and Quill's magical capabilities. She started digging through her pack so that she could start putting the fire to use and making something to eat. She also let Oasis out to go hunt and explore. "Aww you've been cooped up since I was flying, haven't you?" She nuzzled her then smiled as Oasis rubbed against her leg before slithering off.
