Azrael stared out the window and watched the scenery pass by quickly, "Azreal." She slowly turned to look at him,
"Yes, sir." The male chuckled quietly.
"I am no longer you're superior, there is no need to address me as such." She tilted her head softly and he just sighed, "Do as you wish." She accepted this and hoped he would just move on. They came to a quick stop and the man stepped out first and held a hand for her but she ignored it gracefully. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and took a few seconds. "We should be greeted momentarily." -
"But I don't want this murderer in my home." said Madeline to her hand maid as she put on her dress. Her maid said "How can you say that? Your father raised her and she's accomplished a lot. She should be like a sister to you." Madeline said "She killed my brother, and she just watched as my father died on the battlefield. I have no right to be friendly to her." "At least grin and bear it, just for your aunt." said her maid. Madeline sighed and said "Fine, but I won't smile." She then walked out of the room, wearing her fancy dress.
-
After a few moments, a lady came out to greet them, " A Lieutenant, nice to see you again." She greeted the man with Azreal.
"You aren't helping Alice. Please don't call me that." He said with a small laugh.
"Oh then come along then." She said and turned around and the two of them followed. The lieutenant went up and talked to the maid as she took them where they were going, Azreal knew that the man that raised her and him had basically grown up together so she was sure he knew this lady well. They arrived at a set of doors.
"I'm going to made sure they're ready for you." She said with a small smile and slipped into the room. -
Madeline's aunt was making some adjustments to Maddie's hair. She said "Just try and get along with her, okay honey." "I still don't see why she has to come here." Madeline said. Her aunt said "Because, I owe it to your father to take care of all he cares about. Like you." Madeline sighed and just kept a neutral face as a maid came in to check on them. Madeline's aunt said "Let them in."
-
Once the maid had come back out she talked to the man for a second and then opened the door, "Okay, hon. Come on in." Azreal followed them in silently when they stopped the lieutenant coughed gently. She took a few steps forward, she grabbed the sides of her skirt and placed one foot behind the other and bowed, "I am Azreal. Nice to meet you, Miss." She said and stood back up straight and dropped the skirt from her hands. She knew that her name was taken from the angel of death but that wasn't something she was ashamed of and liked her name.
-
"The pleasure is mine. I am Duchess Gabrielle and this is my niece, Princess Madeline" Madeline's aunt said and she curtsied like Azreal. Madeline did the same thing but wasn't smiling. Gabrielle then stood straight and said "I hope you find our home as comforting as possible."
-
Azreal nodded slowly, "Thank you for welcoming me into your home, my lady." She stated standing respectfully as she'd been taught. Her eyes shifted to the Madeline and then back to Gabrielle unsure of what to do next.
-
"You're welcome. You will be staying in the room my niece is staying in. One of the maid will be around shortly to take you and her to the room. This place can be a little confusing to get used to so feel free to ask any questions to the servants." Gabrielle said. She walked and said "Lieutenant, may I speak to you in private?"
-
"Yes, of course." The man said and walked towards her, "Where would you like to speak?" He asked. Azreal watched him and then looked straight forward, not caring at all about their conversation as it was none of her business.
-
Gabrielle said "Just follow me." and she lead him to the outside hall. Once she closed the door, she asked "Are you sure the girl is okay? She's not gonna kill us in our sleep?""
As soon as Gabrielle stepped out, Madeline dropped her act and said "Okay, let's get something straight here. I. Hate. You. And if it were up to me, I'd have you killed by guillotine. But my aunt seems to think your worth saving and keeping. So we may be roommates, but we are not friends. So stay away from me, dirty brother killer." -
The lieutenant sighed softly, "Yes, Gabrielle the girl will be fine. She's not going to harm you. She's a soldier she doesn't do much without orders, despite otherwise told." He looked at her softly.
Azreal turned to face the girl with a blank stare, "I'm sorry if my presence has upset you, princess." She stated sincerely, "This was not my intention. I was just told this is where I was supposed to be stationed after my release from the hospital." -
Gabrielle said "Okay. I just want to make sure. I've heard of what she's capable of. I just hope she doesn't suddenly decide I'm the enemy. Thanks for the reassurance."
Madeline just shook her head and waited for Aunt Gabrielle. -
He shrugged, "She won't." He stated and went to walk away, "The most horrifying thing I saw during what war was finding her and your brother at the end of that siege. And she, a child, had to live through that. I'm not doubting his choices but I child should not be in a war zone. And besides, that's a girl who will have to live the rest of her life with metal arms." He huffed slightly and walked out.
Azreal felt like she had said something wrong but didn't say anything else. She waited for the lieutenant to come out and soon he did, "Ok, kiddo. I'm leaving now." He stated and placed a hand on her head and tried to mess up her hair a but by ruffling it, "Call me if you need me." He whispered and walked out giving a small wave as he left. -
Gabrielle watched the Lieutenant leave and Azreal walked out. She said to her "Be careful, my friend." She walked back in and said to Madeline "What did you say to her?" Madeline said "Nothing." Gabrielle sighed and said "Look, I know you don't like her. But I requested her to be here to protect you and to take care of her like your father." She could tell Maddie was still unhappy and said "There's no getting around it. She's living here. Learn to deal with it." and she left.
