Mr. Manchester sighed, deciding to take it slow. "Well, as you know, we've been having some money trouble lately. Andrew Dallas has offered us five hundred thousand dollars." Her father told her excitedly. "You two used to go to school together, what do you think about him?" Her father asked.
-
"Andrew Dallas?" I repeated, bititng my nails as I tried to remember him fully, "Ohhh! Andrew! We weren't in the same grade but he helped me a lot. He's pretty nice. Why would he want to give you five hundred thousand dollars anyways? Isn't that too much?"
-
"I'm glad you like him, because he would like to ask for your hand in marriage." Her father told her, smiling proudly.
I listened to them from the door. Yes, maybe that was a bit wrong, but it was worth it to hear the way she thought of me. She wasn't crazy about me or anything, but she knew me as nice and helpful. That was definitely a good start. I smiled as I returned to the table and talked to Mrs. Manchester, telling her about my job and she told me about her daughter. -
I blinked, "Huh?"
-
"In return for five hundred thousand dollars, Andrew Dallas seeks your hand in engagement, and someday marriage." Her father cheered, explaining it more clearly. "I wanted to make sure I had your consent before agreeing." He added.
-
Papa shouldn't be asking my consent on this. They were broke. They needed the money more than anything, if I have to sell myself then so be it. To help the family. "Alright." I smiled. I wasn't happy though, but I had to think of my family first.
-
He sighed in relief and took her hand. "I'm so glad you agreed." He cheered, bringing Blair downstairs. I smiled at her beauty and stood up, watching her as they walked down the stairs. I handed Mr. Manchester the briefcase before getting down on one knee and opening the box in my hand. "Blair Manchester? Would you do me the honour of being my Fianc, and someday wife?" Andrew asked, looking into her eyes. Oh, for so long, he has waited for this glamorous day.
-
I stared down at him and ring, then i pooked at my family. before slowly nodding my head
-
I smiled ear to ear as I put the ring on her ring finger. I massaged her hand in my own as I stood up and studied her. She certainly wasn't ecstatic, but she was willing, and that was a start. "I invite you to dinner at my place this Friday at Seven to celebrate." I told her family happily. "Hopefully by then you'll be used to your new home." He told Blair, smiling as he lead her to his car.
-
I walked to my parents and stood there, expecting them to hug me or just say something. I just took a huge step in my life.
-
Her parents followed her out the door. Kendra smiled proudly, tears of joy bubbling in her eyes, and hugged her daughter tightly. "I'm so happy for you!" She cheered. "Make sure you write to us whenever you can! I'm going to miss you!" Her mother cheered. I smiled as I watched them, happy that a wonderful girl like Blair had such wonderful parents. "Please take good care of my daughter." Arnold asked. I nodded, shaking his hand. "You have my word I will." I assured him, smiling at Blair. I still couldn't believe this girl was finally mine.
-
I smiled at my mom and dad. Before following Andrew. Once I got in the car, I tokk a huge breath. The tears didn't seem to fall.
-
"Are you Okay Blair?" I asked, worried that our engagement caused her pain. I loved her and I wanted, no, needed desperately for her to be happy with me. I needed her to love me, to want me, to need me as much as I did her. There would be time for that. He knew he couldn't expect to just snap his fingers and have her fall to her knees for him. No, it didn't work that way. He knew he needed to earn her feelings, but he didn't expect the thought of him to make her miserable,
-
I shook my head and smiled at him.
-
"I promise you, I will try my very hardest to make you happy with me." I told her as I pulled onto the road. "Not sure if my grammar was correct, but you get my point." I added, chuckling as I tried to loosen the tension.
