I smile. "I know. But...I can't watch you die." I whisper, looking into the fire. I couldn't stand to see him without the cute smile, or the spirit that danced in his eyes. "I don't want to win, but I also don't want to lose." I sigh. "It's...complicated."
-
I sigh, "well if you don't win you're dead. But I do know what you mean..." I stare into the darkness, thinking.
-
I sit in silence, watching the sparks fly up. They look like the fireflies I used to catch as a kid. I sigh again, homesick.
-
"Do you think we'll ever go back home?" I say with a sig , breaking the silence. I think of my farm and little sister, mary. She's only four. If she ever get's into these games when she's older, I'll do anything to stop it.
-
I don't look away from the fire, not wanting to show weakness. "I...I don't know."
-
"So tell me about your family..." I say, awkwardly changing the subject.
-
I smile somewhat sadly. "My parents died when a disease hit a few years ago. I pretty much raised my two little brothers. It's been hard, but not too hard. I learned to catch and sell fish for a living, although I can't find anything to fish with here." I tell him, thinking of my brothers, Timothy and David.
-
"Oh....." I say, "I'm sorry about your parents."
-
I smile at him again. "It's fine. It was years ago, my brothers barley remember it. What's your family like?"
-
"Well I have a mom and one sister. My father was abusive and... I don't really wanna talk about it. But my sister is only four and my mother is sick..." I shrug with a frown.
-
I blink rapidly. "Oh...I'm really sorry. I guess it must've been hard for you." I take the animal's meat off the fire and split it between us.
-
"Yeah...." I take the meat with a grin, "thanks," I smile and take a bite then grimace, "well it sure is.... meaty..." I spit out a chewy chunk of meat.
-
I struggle to chew through it. I swallow, not feeling anything strange. "At least it's edible. And-" I'm cut off at the sound of two cannons.
-
"Crap..." I mutter. I look up at the sky, "hey, shouldn't it be about time for the anthem and-" I'm cut off when the sky glows and the anthem starts to play.
-
I look away when I see the small career girl, and gasp when I see another face flash. "...Jarr." I whisper. He wasn't close to me, but he was still from home. I turn away, unable to watch anymore.
