Here's an idea: Let's encourage the US churches to solve the homeless problem. There are 18 million vacant homes, and a million homeless people. Many vacant houses can be purchased for a few thousand dollars and fixed up for a few thousand more. US churches collect $100 billion a year in tithes.
So, let's say they spend 20 thousand dollars buying and fixing up each home. These won't be palaces, but they could be safe and offer all the necessities.
If they bought a million homes and fixed them up, they would be spending 20 billion dollars.
There are 350,000 churches ... so that would be about three homes per church. Now, if they decided to tackle this project over three years, that would be one home per church per year. Church members and others could volunteer to help fix the homes up and businesses and suppliers could help and could donate time, labor, and equipment. They could also help to ensure that whoever is going to live in the house has a job and can pay to keep utilities on and food in the house.
Spread out over three years, the churches would be spending about $6 billion a year, or about 6% of their tithes each year.
But at the end of three years, there will be no homeless people in the US and the churches would have actually solved one of our problems.
Who else is on board? It'd be great if this idea got more exposure, but you guys are the spreaders of information. I don't have the kind of money to run radio or TV stations like the nuts who do.
This..makes me sad, I'm not even hopeful because I know churches wouldn't be willing to do this. -
Churches arent fountains of goodwill. Its where christians come to worship God as a group. They do good projects but they have a goal of brining people to Christ and glorifying him.
-
^That's why I have no hope for the human race.
-
Is it the fact there will be homeless people or do you not like christianity?
-
Neither. But I'll let you figure out why I have no hope yourself.
-
-100 billion dollars a year
-6 billion over a period of three years
-They won't give up but 6% of their money, plenty for the church and the homeless.
She gave up on humanity because ignorant people like you can't read details. -
Want, you're guilty of the exact same thing you're claiming Geek is guilty of.
"have a goal"
"bringing people to Christ"
"glorifying him."
Geek was saying that they won't do it because it doesn't serve their cause. It doesn't benefit them. Religion is very hypocritical like that. -
I apologize, then. I guess I had hopes maybe churches were better then that.:/ Sorry.

Jesus fed the poor. Jesus, or at least the version I know about, is benevolent towards the disadvantaged. Yet that appears to be the aspect most ignored. Or at least considered and then shrugged off.

tenten16 NewbieHi. Thats because most churches have lost the vision that god intended for us. Thats why they arent doing as much. @ Appayipayip42, totally!

That's a horribly depressing thought.. It's true that the amount of money it would take is very low, considering the amount they usually end up with anyway, and the considerable good it would do for our country. And for there to be a surplus of places where these people could live, but that fact be ignored is a tragedy at it's finest. I have no connections to churches anymore... but if I ever see a chance to promote this idea, I will take it.
-
Most churches generaly are about 10% beund the amount of money they need. Except huge megachurches.
-
Listen here, Geek. If the job of the church is to get together and glorify god, then why not get together and help others? I go to a Christian school, and the teachers say that it's not enough just to say you're Christian, you have to go out there and glorify god with your actions. This, I think, would be the perfect opportunity for the church to do just that. But of course they won't.
I myself am not religious by any stretch, but I agree with many of the good works that it promotes. -
Words can be very hollow, horse. Ask your teachers what all they actually do to "glorify god with their actions."
In fact, name anything that the church has actually ever done that helped humanity in the end.
I'm not talking about programs that have a saints name attached to them or anything like that, I'm talking about an actual event, that can be accredited to the church, that actually helped people in the long run. -
Kendall NoviceHow about the homeless people stop wasting their money on lottery, drugs, alcohol, etc. and get a job. Then, they can buy their OWN house. (I'm only talking about the homeless people who spend their money like that, not ALL the homeless people.)
