At the top of the Washington Monument (I can't spell sorry), "Praise God" is engraved in Latin. ._.
-
You spelled it right.
-
Laus Deo?
-
yes. laus deo.
america was also founded on the idea of seperating politics from religion...
fukin hypocrits... -
No, freedom of religion gives the right for all to practice religion. "Praise Buddha" could be up there just as much as "Praise God".
-
but it's a ppolitical memorial and that piece isnt necessary. so why would they bother?
but i dont want to start this here. lets drop it. -
Actually the politics from religion thing doesn't involve monuments, at least not from what I understand.
It means not basing things like laws on religion (as in there cannot be laws that say everyone must attend church every Sunday.) -
Based on what I've read and whatnot, here's what I've gotten out of it all:
The reason why it's up there is because the founding fathers believed that a nation couldn't survive without religion, or at least that religion was important. Apparently as you go up to the top, there are also passages from the Bible engraved or placed there as well.
The reason why they have the pieces engraved on things like that and put on there was to bring faith and hope. To try and bring the nation together with something. It's not meant to insult Athiests or anything. For crying out loud, before this generation, most people believed in God... so how would they know not to put it there when just about everyone believed in it at the time? :p
Words fail me, but I hope you understand where I'm coming from. And hopefully what I've stated is correct as well >.> -
I agree completely.
-
Yeah, I think if it were meant to insult anyone it would probably say "f--- you *insert group here*" or that day's equivalent.
-
i never said it was an insult!?
I wasnt refering to it as an insult!

-me explaining why i didnt understand it, and me TRYING TO NOT START THIS s---.

sorry, have i been labeled as a religion hater? Can i honestly not post in this forum without it starting a debate? -
I certainly wasn't trying to insult you either T_T
You didn't understand. So I explained what I think was going on, trying to help you or anyone else who came along with a thought. That was all it was. I didn't mean you make you think that I was trying to start something. And besides, it didn't have to be directed towards you, it could have just been a note or thought of why I thought it was there >.>
Jesus christ, cool down, man. -

I think this paragraph is where I got the idea that both you were talking to me, and you thought i was insulting religion. -
Well, maybe I was talking to you. But I wasn't trying to be offensive, that's just why I thought it was on there >.>
-
They still refer to god in oh Canada. It's so annoying. I mean, sing it if you like. Great. But don't make innocent kindergarteners sing it. Don't influence them. Just let them decide who they're going to think they should sing praise of.
