God damn Noah and that stupid f---ing fish. WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE.
We know it existed long before the fiana cycle, since we're expected to just know what it is. Which implies it was common folk knowledge, but has since been forgotten in favour of a Christian history, and rewriting of our myths to kill us off.
The salmon of wisdoms Origin is completley unknown, aside from two christian explanations, and one of those doesn't quite make any sense as they seem to imply that even before this specific fish that there was an original salmon of wisdom.
The main explanation is that some dude who married Noah's granddaughter got turned into the salmon, but that is another can of worms.
It kills both my Irish heart and my archaeologist spirit to know I'll never understand the damn fish
f---ing salmon of wisdom
[ Inb4 anyone attempts to debate this, Don't. Its a fact that this happened in Ireland. A very violent and bloody conflict because of religious oppression popped up only very recently. I'm not willing to debate ya'll. This is a humorous rant to cope with the erasure of my culture. Which is a fact, do not attempt to deny history. /srs ] -
Éire, Fódla and Banba are our matron goddesses. Goddesses of the island, it is after Éire that we were named, though Banba and Fódla often get recognised as poetic names.
The book of invasions begins with Cesaire the granddaughter of noah arriving, and behaving in the manner of Éire, and her sisters. As if to explain the female roots of the land without ascribing it directly to whom it truly belongs.
This is cleared up at the end of the book of invasions. The original text or smthn, idk man. -
It hurts to try to reconnect to something that will never fully be whole again. There's supplementary information, and modern tradition, but it's not the same. I'll never be able to experience worship in the correct way, or even know if there ever was a correct way.
I should be thankful that unlike Wales, I was never alive during the time my language was banned. It helps me know our songs, and understand what little scripture there remains. And the ruins are preserved enough nowadays to at least get that catharsis, and see echoes of a long passed era -
It went against druidic culture to write down our epics, and so they were largely oral tradition until some scholars of the Christian faith elected to write them down. Aspects were thus missing, or replaced but in cases like Cu Chulainn the story largely remains untarnished.
Druidery was outlawed during the roman occupation, and druids were slaughtered and chased out from ancestral lands. Our groves burned down, to remove our influence deemed a threat to roman goals.
Druids seemed not to have been wiped out conpeltley due to our opposition to the spread of Christianity. Its a widely held belief that Saint Patrick chasing the snakes from Ireland is very much referring to Druids. Though, whether he used violence or not to do so is hotly debated. -
Of course, it's not all the Catholic Church. Globalisation and our colonisation by england/the British empire is a major part of our loss. Its hard to reconcile everything.
The broken harp is a common symbol of Ireland, which ties into our pagan routes. -
Tbf, irish catholics also have a history of oppression by the British empire. So a lot of this is religious trauma too, a lot of it is also just cultural trauma.
-
The loss of Irish garlic as a language because of British imperialism is a crime against humanity 💔 so much of Irish folk culture was perverted or lost because of it. The way they took Cernunnos and perverted him to be the image of Satan,,,,, I could go on for hours about the atrocities done to Irish religion
-
I recognize that Irish Gaelic is still a thing. I just meant the loss of the common tongue and how it's fighting to survive in modernity.
-
What's even more interesting is cernnunos is actually not even irish! He's gaulish, and because they lumped us all into one he's removed further from his origins and its so sad to see!
You're right! The language I use is modernised, it's not true Irish Gaelic at all. It's something derived from it. And it's so f---ing devastating. And I was bullied out of speaking it and lost fluency for literal years -
For anyone not aware;
It was illegal to speak Welsh in Wales, until 1967, and it wasn't fully legal until 1993.
Gaelic [ Scots and irish] were banned in schools, and forbidden to be taught. Children were beaten, which is a practice that [ albeit illegally] still occurs today. Which is what I experienced that cost me my fluency. Which I'm slowly re-learning.
The British empire, was trying their damned hardest to wipe out celtic culture, religion and history -
Speaking irish was illegal for 500 years, which effectively killed our oral traditions. We weren't supposed to write our history down, as it was seen as taboo to do so, it was to be sung, and spoken but never written.
-
Also; Saint Patrick's day is an awful Holiday and I hate it. And people asking me about it because I'm Irish are so f---ing annoying. It's a celebration of erasure. That's literally what it is. f--- Saint Patrick.

I dont like when people judge a religion they don't even realise exists. It pisses me off, to have my culture judged. When I highly doubt people truly know what they're talking about.
I've had people say my culture deserved to be wiped out because we were super evil savages and practiced human sacrifice. Which.
Didn't happen.
Except for one potential example, where tyrants were Drowned in the bog 😭
And I'm 99% sure that's satire -
Our underworld and afterlife myths are so corrupted that they've been replaced with Christian hell. What is this? Dante's Inferno? /sar
All information on "cannibalism" and "human sacrifice" were made up to bring down a rival religion. And it carries on today!! And it's a f---ing nightmare. Even if in the old days we did, so did literally every other religion basically, so don't come for me on this. -
Also, the amount of s--- I get for collecting animal bones for my alter. Like f--- off! Not everyone prays in orderly manners. Sometimes worship is going into the woods, and finding old bones. Sometimes worship is messy, and chaotic and that's okay!!
