I've seen gothic Christians. And being goth doesn't mean you hate the world and worship death. So, what is is, then? Why do people think it's wrong?
-
I guess because it has to do with dark stuff
-
Its mostly stereotypes and misinformation. And I think some people misunderstand gothic culture. A lot of gothic culture is appreciating and finding beauty in the darker side of life and I think when people hear that and see somebody walking around "like its haloween" as they like to say- they think there must be something off about that. Or that they must be appreciating the devil who in their eyes, is like the darkest side of life itself lol.
Society tends to judge anyone who does not dress for the norm as well, which is another reason. I think colour theory also comes into play. Villains and evil stuff in media are typically colour coded into dark colours and chains and spikes. It's a very common theme. So when ppl see it irl, some of them probably associate it w similar things lol. Like how people who wear yellow have others thinking they're cheerful and bright bc yellow is like the sun and such
Some Christians as well, tend to run on fear. Their religion itself is fear based - so anything which they think threatens their faith they'll back away from rather than try and learn more about it. So rather than come to understand that a good majority of Goths are not satanists or demons from hell themselves and are actually very sweet people lol, they'd rather stick with the stereotypes or fear based opinions driven into them and run w that
I think another thing, Christians and a lot of other religions have a big thing on dressing in a modest way and not drawing attention to yourself. Some of them can be pretty judgy when they see somebody dressing outside of what they feel is suitable and appropriate for people to dress as. So when they see somebody dressing up in a way that stands out and draws attention to them or seems scandalous or vulgar lol - they get a bit judgy. As somebody who grew up in a negative religious environment and has been gothic since around early preteen years, I can confirm that if they're not thinking you're dark and scary and evil they're thinking your dressing like a (insert misogynistic slur here). But I do want to emphasize that is in a negative religious environment. I have also met a good percentage of religious people who are super accepting and even excited to see alternative styles. And I've met alt religious people themselves. And not all Christians and other religious people are going to run around in fear 24/7 too. But yeah, for those that do act like that, that's probably some of the reasons why??? It all rounds back to stereotypes and misinformation -
But for me that is all entirely true 😈 I AM here to eat religious babies and send love notes to Satan himself. I want to kiss Satan on his beautiful evil lips. I am in a romantic relationship with evil itself 😈😈😈 fear me
Jk of course -
Ah, I see. Thanks for the insite.
And with that, I would also like to officially announce that I've always been gothic at heart, judging by everything you've said. I was never able to dress in the manner, but I've always appreciated and understood what people thought were "darker" things.
