There is a high estimate of 40 billion planets which are capable of supporting earth like life in the milky way galaxy alone. The possibility of life unlike what we know, and life outside of the galaxy considered, it seems improbable that many, many civilizations exist off earth. However, given the sheer size of space and time, it would be eqaully astronomical for us to ever encounter even a space faring civilization.

The drake equation if im not mistaken seeks to find the number of extra terrestrial civilizations it may be possible to make radio contact with...
Im not familiar with the hermes paradox but it sounds like literally the opposite; seeking to find the relative improbability of contact?
Are you saying that it could go either way? Or are you just categorizing? -
Can't find anything that seems relevant on the first few pages of google on the hermes paradox. ..it sounds dope though, care to educate me?

Who says we haven't encountered any? There's a lot of fake videos and photos out there but there are some that I think are real and can't be identified as anything we know.
I personally believe life has been here in the skies, as for "close encounters" well think what that would do to us if it happened - most of the population would think they'd gone mad. -
Wait a minute, now that I think about it, as long as we're taking shots in the dark about wht seems possible, its just as easy to imagine a civilization sufficiently advanced and interested to seek out civilization with searching methods capable of actually finding the ones few and far between.

That is what scientists are doing here -we just are at the early stages of it and don't have the technology to get there (yet).
