It's a realm between Hell and Heaven(If those places are real) or even a level beneath Hell, is a place for a spirit to suffer to purify so they could finally go to Heaven. The spirit isn't good enough to go heaven or bad enough to go to the depths of hell, which is mostly where America is gonna after we all die by Weegee's attack. -
Believe it or not, purgatory is no longer commonly taught in Catholicism. I didn't know about it until I started reading an old textbook from my middle school.
But it's basically the hospital waiting room. You don't know what kind of news you're going to get, so you hope for the best and prepare for the worst. -
The way I've always had it explained to me was that Purgatory was for people who have done wrong, but have also accepted God. They still need to be punished, but it's a trial time before they can go to heaven.

I've always thought as purgatory has it was thought of as it was in the Renaissance Era, endless hours of torture and brutality.
