Thread Topic: Okay, I have two questions.

1) Would I be considered atheist because I don't believe in either side (God, The Devil, Heaven, Hell) because there is no scientific proof? Google is not helping me right now.
2) I have this really religious friend and I finally told him my belief. He stared before saying, "Where's the scientific proof that two plus two equals for? What about why birds fly?" I want to argue but I don't. This all sounds needy. But is there a way to tell the guy that he's being ridiculous but in a nice way? -

He seems to have no grasp on what "scientific proof" actually means. Two plus two isn't even a question about scientific proof. It's basic addition.
If I have in one hand and in the other hand; in both hands combined I have
There isn't even science needed for that. It's physical reality.
As for birds flying, the shape of their wings creates a vacuum of denser and thinner atmospheric pressure creating lift. It's the same reason why airplanes fly.
As for your friend, I would suggest the following.
"The physical world can be tested and repeated. Even if I don't know how something works, I can figure it out through research and it can be explained. Reality can be explained and proven. God cannot. -
Thank. You.
He is just incredibly difficult at times and I had no clue what to say. Gracias. -
You shouldn't say anything xD be nice, and accept that you have differences. If he gets pushy, get a playful. Its a friendship not a business partnership, you dont NEED to resolve these differences. You dont NEED to talk about them

The idea that the physical world is simply an illusion does have some philosophical credibility. However I personally don't think it is a good idea to base your entire belief system around that idea, or in your friend's case, reject all empirical knowledge just to support blind faith and belief. It is best to trust your senses and believe only those things that are proven to be fact. Atheists believe in facts, theists believe what they want. To me anything but atheism is just wishful thinking, whether you are convinced God exists or are waiting for God to present himself.

Bastille NoviceTo answer your first question, yes, that is considered atheism. Atheism is when you don't believe in any gods.
Tell your friend that he is doubting certain beliefs as well. For example, ask him if he believes in Norse, Egyptian, Roman, etc. gods and point out that's how you feel about God.
