CHRISTIANITY IS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER RELIGIONS.....in that
Its Influence. At the top of this page you will find a date 2013. It is 2013 years since the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. He divided history. You cannot write a cheque, sign a document, get married, celebrate a birthday, buy a newspaper, or do many other things without recognising the birth date of the Lord Jesus Christ. Why?
Its Book. The Bible has been and still is the best selling book of all time. Millions of copies have been sold. No other 5 books combined could match the sales of Bibles, even today. Why?
Its Bible prophecies are unique, they are 100 per cent infallible and better than Nostradamus.
Its songs. Thousands of hymns have been written and are still sung to the praise of Jesus Christ. No other religion has the songs. Why? Ever heard of Nearer my God to Thee, or Abide with me, or Amazing Grace?
Its claims. Jesus Christ claimed to be God. He proved who He was by rising from the dead. Men and women 2,000 years later, all over the world are still celebrating the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ at Christmas and Easter time. Why?
Its changed lives. Millions have availed themselves of the free gift of salvation offered to them through faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ, and have been lifted from a life of sin, shame and degradation and been given a wonderful new life. There is hope. Religion cannot do this, but a relationship with Jesus Christ can.
Its moral obligation. The Bible defines good and evil. There is no point to being good if there is no final judgement.
Its liberty. There is no compulsion. You are free to choose Heaven or Hell now. After death it will be too late.
Its warning. For all who refuse Gods free offer of Salvation, a sad future awaits. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Matthew 25:41
Its solution Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:31 -
I don't think it's different, just more commercialized and used.
I have a problem with this statement. "Its moral obligation. The Bible defines good and evil. There is no point to being good if there is no final judgement."
Morals shouldn't be an obligation, it should be just what it is, from the goodness for your heart, not because of some final judgment which I don't even believe in. -

SECTION 1
These are all just a popularity contest. If you want to get technical, the reason it's still so popular today is because unlike any other religion, Christianity created a dark age. You know? Where people were tortured for not being Christian. Where crusades were taken to slaughter innocent women and children for not being Christian? Yeah, your popularity is due to that. When an entire era is bogged down because of a belief system, it's kinda hard to forget it.
SECTION 2
The bible prophecies are not infallible. And they re not unique. Almost everything the bible says was stolen from other religions and none of them have ever been proven. The exact opposite of unique and infallible.

"I'm going to create man and woman with the chance to do wrong and create original sin but not give them the knowledge of right and wrong so they won't commit that original sin. Then I'm going to condemn them all to death generation after generation for several thousand years before sacrificing myself to myself to save them from that original sin that I originally condemned them with. And even then, unless they worship me with the short life I've condemned them to, they will be tortured for all eternity!"
Not only is that theory a load of crap, but it also requires you actually believe in the religion in the first place. People can't be saved from the sin they don't believe exists.

If the only reason you do good deeds is because you fear damnation then you are a shallow, heartless, dangerous, hateful person. I'm sorry you only are nice because your God is threatening you to do so. The rest of us here in reality can be nice because it's a good thing to do.

Terrorism is not liberty. Your first post explains that people have a free choice, but then you go on to say that if you choose one side you'll be tortured for all eternity and if you choose the other you'll be rewarded with eternal bliss. It's like saying you have the choice of whether or not you want to flip the lever. But if you do I'll shoot you. And if you don't I'll give you a cookie. That's not a choice. That's a threat masquerading as a choice.
And THIS is why I say your religion is hateful. -

There's no reason to be good if there isn't a final judgement...are you f---ing serious. Being moral means you do the right things on your own accord rather than doing the out of fear of punhsiment. It's like a Clockwork Orange kinda thing goin on here (BABE BACK ME UP MY EXPLAINATION SKILLS SUCK!)

1. The only thing that has ever distinguished Christianity from other religions to me is that Christianity converts far more aggressively than other religions.
2. There is far more reason to be good than simply fearing God's wrath. If you put good into life, you will get good out. If you treat people like s---, then your life is going to be s---. -
saph I think you explained it perfectly well. Morality is an internal choice so if someone is prompting you to chose (a or b) with threats or actual force then your not chosing anymore and its no longer a matter of morality your choices arent 'evil' or righteous because you're not picking one out of morality. In clockwork orange they took alex who was a violent criminal and used an expermint procedure on him that would would make him unbearably naseous when he heard beethoven or thought of violence. Even though after that he was completely docile he was not morally right because the choice to do what he did was taken.
Bob, christianity did not create a dark age. The collapse of rome was directly responsible for that, and the crusades which were not religiously motivated but religously JUSTIFIED actually helped to build a more strongly civilized nation. The fact that so many atrocities were commited in the name of christianity is only because as the op said it is immensley popular. -
Lovehorses, yes all religions are different in some respects and alike in others. Most are unique, but the majority of the idea you supplied here are not unique to christianity. Even the popularith aspect is pretty controversial considering its really more a matter of politics then spirituality. But i liked the unassuming spirit in which you presented the idea.
