In my opinion, the only good that has ever come of religion, historically and socially speaking, is that it presents a level of hypocrisy that forces intelligent, moral people to push for truly bettering the world. Religion says one thing and does another.
Actually, that's not even true. Religion convinces people of its righteousness by simply boasting of its own righteousness. But really nothing it says or does actually helps humanity, it simply acts to reinforce to a power structure where a few wealthy elite rule. Western civilization has only become civilized and more equal by gradually eroding religion's stranglehold. Every person who pushed for greater rights of man and more humane society did so sans religion. Humanism, the Enlightenment, and Marx all developed because religion's stated good was contradictory to the lack of good it does. Look at Christianity for example: the Catholic Church in particular stresses that Jesus wanted us all to live in poverty. I CALL BULLs---! If Jesus were alive today he'd be a hardcore Marxist. Now, I'm not saying we should all be Marxists or whatever, but understand that religion is basically a social tool. My peer group provides a good example: all the people I know who openly question religion, with one or two exceptions, are college students with bright futures. The people I know who embrace religion, without exception, are entry-level menial laborers. And they are okay with because they've always been told it is what Jesus wants. PS the only Christians on a college campus are typically business majors. They've basically figured that their religion is a tool for social and economic oppression, so they figure they can use it to get rich. Yes, there are 50 young Mitt Romneys on every college campus, and that's just a small liberal arts schools.
But back to my original point. The hypocrisy of religion is ultimately what has inspired people to push for equality and humane reforms, because anyone with an above-average intelligence can figure out one way or another that religion does nothing to help anyone. They say they'll get you into heaven so long as it will keep to complacent on Earth. I don't know that there is a heaven, no one can know because no one has seen it. So while we're here we should be making the most of it instead of praying to God for our f---ing daily bread. -
A lot of typos, sorry.
*simply acts to reinforce a power structure
*they are okay with it because
*they've basically figured out
*keep you complacent -
It helps bring hope to people that can't find it alone.

@Cute: There is so much wrong with that statement that I don't even know where to begin. But I will try. First of all, part of my rant, if you read it, is that Christianity basically tells humanity to lower its standards. That is not hope. The only hope that Christianity offers is the afterlife, which might as well be a false hope since there is no way of knowing it exists.
I think that will be sufficient for now. -
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the hope of a hopeless world, the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

What does aetheism do?
Gives unemployed people another right to be dicks. -
You're making a link between athiesm to unemployment? Studies have shown that atheists are generally more moral and more intelligent than religious people, don't bash on me, look at the statistics.
-
Geek, if you can even ask that question, you clearly missed the point. Atheism and free thinking (I consider myself a Free Thinker, not an atheist, BTW) has done and can do far more good than religion ever has or ever could.
-
Under religion there has been economies which work, under aetheisim their is a highly bankrupt one.
-
On the contrary, Norway is 70% atheist. They have the second highest GDP per-capita in the world, an unemployment rate below 2%, and an average hourly wage among the worlds highest.
In the United states (where I'm assuming you're talking about), it is still illegal in 7 states for Atheists to run for Political office. In the entire national government, there is one agnostic in one branch of political office. Every president ever has been Christian, and in the state I personally live in, running for office and not having "God protects" as one of your political planks is considered treason and can have you arrested for up to 12 months. -
So if I run for office, and don't say I'm religious, it's considered treason? Not like I'd win if I ran for office, but damn.
-
12 months in prison for not giving all the credit of the police, fire department, military, and medical services to God.
-
Never heard of that before.
