Thread Topic: Why argue?
-
Everyone's got an opinion, and most people think they have a valid reason for believing in what they believe.
My question is why do you bother to argue it?
What is the point in sitting down to right a point and collect reasons why you're right, then sell it to other people.
I'm not saying that I don't do it, or that it's the wrong thing to do, but what do you have to gain by making an argument? -
again, not passing judgment on the behavior, I'm just curious what you do it for. when you sit down to write what are you motivated by?

If this is a philosophical question, then I'm going to completely miss the point here. If this is an honest question and you're looking for answers, then I'll go ahead and say.
I personally debate religion because I used to adhere to it. I know that personally since I left not only broadened my horizon and thinking capacity, but I've also become much more open to other people and have found myself to be much happier. No constant feeling of unworthiness or guilt for being human and having human thoughts. No more constantly trying to appease a father figure who not only punishes you for being born, but refuses to even let you know he's paying attention.
Being Atheist has led me to live a much more fulfilling life than I ever would have achieved staying Christian.
I know a lot of people say that without religion they'd be dead but I guess I'm the opposite. If I stayed Christian I would be dead by now.
I guess that when I look around here and I see people who remain ignorant to the scientific truths that are out there for anyone to find simply because their religion tells them to it makes me sad. It makes me want them to share in the experiences I've felt and move forward with their lives instead of relying on 2,000 year old rehashed fairy tales.
Whenever I see someone who supports a hateful belief or remains closed off to other people simply because their church has taught them to, I really do feel the urge to help them take that step. To help them think for themselves and learn what all is out there to learn.
I guess that I am a firm believe that if you can teach a Theist to think logically and welcome information and evidence, that there would be no theists. -
strictly for the betterment of the people you argue with then?
You think you've got something good and want to share? -
I know that my life has improved and I want to at least get other people to think for themselves and question themselves before dedicating their lives to any one thing.
