Pascal's wager:
If you believe and you're right, you get heaven.
If you aren't right, you get nothing.
If you don't believe and you're right, you get nothing.
And if you are wrong, you burn for eternity.
Logical fallacies: -
1. what if you believe in the wrong god? There is a gargantuan sum of Gods out there and they all demand you believe solely in them. Believing in any one would instantly damn you to hell for all the others. If you cannot prove yours is right, then it holds no more validity than the others.
-
2. If a deity is omnipotent, then they can tell the difference between true belief and just believing to play it safe. So believing simply so you won't go to hell would be lying to that God about your beliefs.
-
3. the cost of belief. One thing your wager doesn't consider is the cost of belief. Actively believing in a god does have negative impact on our lives. For example, some religions forbid certain medical treatments, some religions require you to donate a sum of time and money to their cause, some religions may forbid things that we as humans find desirable. Such as alcohol, sexual intercourse, or even meat. The vast majority of religions that are based around some form of deity greatly deplete mans ability and aspiration to learn more about the physical realm we occupy and prevent scientific research from advancing.

shall I go on?
