With every tragedy, you will inevitably see Facebook posts asking for "thoughts and prayers" You also inevitably see someone respond "why don't you do something instead of praying?" What I would like to see is someone respond "why don't you do something instead criticizing my beliefs?"
I'm not a Christian, not by any stretch of the imagination. But to all the non-believers out there, I have a little advice: unless you plan on donating blood, giving money to the Red Cross, or best of all, actually volunteering to be part of the relief effort, just shut your damn mouth. You aren't held to a higher standard just because you don't believe in God. Criticizing Christians for "not doing anything" and doing nothing yourself makes you a hypocrite like everyone else.
Me, I'm an agnostic. I still believe the best thing you can do is donate time and effort to the relief effort. But if you want to pray, go ahead. There's at least a chance that it will do something to help. Criticizing people's beliefs over the Internet, on the other hand, does nothing to help those affected by the disaster. -
I agree actually. Sometimes, it comforts people to know they're being prayed for, and comfort is usually what the people need (besides survival kits of course).
I can't donate nor do I pray, but I try to at least not hurt any more than it does. -
I've donated blood and am currently collecting for a care package.
The only reasons I haven't gone yet is because I'm forcing myself through finals and am horribly broke.
I know I could do more, but I'm still doing more than most that I know. So yes, I do tell people to stop being lazy. But I also give suggestions of how they can help without too much inconvenience to their "terribly" busy lives. -
I literally can't do anything except pray since I'm too young to donate blood, am completely broke, and my parents won't let me go to help out since it's "too dangerous." Sometimes, when people say, "Thoughts and prayers," it's because that's the only thing they can do.
And I would like to thank Tongue for saying that because not just Christians, but theists in general, have to deal with a lot of crap like that. Saying that praying is meaningless doesn't necessarily make you wrong (I mean, there is no solid proof God truly does exist), but it sure as hell makes you an ass.
And by the way, if anyone knows a quick way to make a few bucks, I am trying to raise money for the people in OK, so any ideas would be great. -
Talk to your school about starting a fund raiser. Maybe a community event. Something that can bring people together to donate money to the situation. Maybe set out a budget and what you want to accomplish with that budget.

Will do, thanks!
