Idiots breed before their time, and breed more often at that.
The smart people wait longer, but by then, there's two idiots for each smart person.
No idiot wants a smart person: those are the "nerds". They want to stick around and fool around with other idiots.
At that point, there were 3 idiots for each smart person. The idiots realized that they were the majority, and that they were special: they didn't really understand what kind of "special" they were, though.
So they harrassed the smart people. Some were too smart to fall for this and contined to breed smart people, continued on their path. But some were weaker than others: they lowered their standards to be like the rest. One less smart person, one more idiot.
Now, there are at least 4 idiots for each smart person. Not that that's true: I made that little statistic up myself, as well as the story.
