1st of all my school friend retonutio was once like heavyheart. Heavy Heart has probably linked a quiz to get the novice status.Then he/she put the picture. Although if you don't make a quiz in 4 days you get shot down to newbie and on red.

Welllllll...you can have a picture as a newbie if you become a novice for like 6 days(like me), set a picture, and then you get dropped back down to a newbie. These days, anyway. I heard that you used to be able to have a picture no matter what status level you have.
So basically what doodle said. -

You have to become a novice to have a profile pic. You used to be able to get one when you were a newbie (I think)
