Thread Topic: Why do people make such a big deal about their mental
-
Like you go through someone’s bio and it’s literally:
Eloise
- self-diagnosed with depression, anxiety,
- I am neurodivergent, cis-gendered, non-binary, non-nesting solo polyamorous (took this straight off a discussion on Reddit bc I still look at some interesting things lolllll)
- BTS stan
I mean, labeling yourself and screaming it to the entire world is pointless. You’re valid no matter what you are, and people are throwing around mental disorders like they’re just words. -
And when people introduce themselves, they’re just trying to “out-mental-disorder” the person above them??
-
It’s not them making a huge deal out of it. More like they want people to know a little about themselves and what they go through. Just quick facts about themselves. It’s costs no one anything to know these things about people.
But I get what you’re saying, and how it can come off like that. Especially when some people "out-mental-disorder" other people. There are often times when it feels like people need to have a disorder just to feel valid or to fit in. -
But you also have to understand that some people feel like it’s easier to go by labels, so that they can easily define themselves. It’s nothing wrong with that, and really, why does/should it bother other people?
Someone who says they’re this and that shouldn’t effect you. They don’t label themselves for you or anyone, they do it for themselves. -
The way that I like to think about it although this may not be the case for everybody but it is a fact that "hatred is accompanied by ignorance"
No unfortunately not everybody seems to understand this correctly because everybody seems to think that they can get more power by throwing out what they struggle with rather than sharing everything that leads up to the point where they're at in the current day and age.
It is obvious that giving somebody knowledge on who they are will provide less reason for somebody to dislike that person but what makes these people invalid with what they do is the fact that they include very little compared to what would actually curb ignorance. "We are only as ignorant as the opposing Force lets us"
People recognize this but not to its full extent. they typically cherry-pick the worst things or the best things and they don't include motive as to why they are the way they are. Thanks to this people are still ignorant. When they look at this person all they seized the mental conditions that they have rather than what a lot of the time leads up to the mental conditions they have. Now I'm not speaking for all mental conditions but a lot of them such as chronic anxiety are chronic and they have reasons as to why they exist there are some others out there like schizophrenia, autism, ADHD (maybe), ect. That end up as something they're born with but the ones who find themselves in generalized anxiety disorder and depression and other such mental illnesses can often be traced down to something and due to trauma being something that people don't like to talk about, nobody ever really knows the reason as to why they are the way they are so all that they see is the mental condition with no underlying reason therefore people may not take this seriously and due to them not taking it seriously they don't understand and they tend to be ignorant.
Most of these people don't provide reasoning and they don't provide their story there for ignorance is still a thing and all that they're doing is a dressing down what they have whether it's legit or not but I'm not one to cast doubt. Maybe even they're just using it to fit in like has been addressed above. Regardless it really doesn't do anything positive unless if everybody knows the details. Having mental issues it's not something that should be utilized as a hi article title at the very top but with nobody providing story that leads up to it that's what it's become because nobody takes it serious. -
I’m not sure if I read that correctly, but are you saying that if they don’t post the story or details behind their disorders or struggles it’s ignorant and shouldn’t be valid? How does that make sense?
Or are you saying that for the other party who doesn’t understand why someone would post these types of things in bios. That lack of explanations doesn’t help those who don’t understand how they are and how they became the person they are now? If so, why should it fall on the person to educate these people? -
I just skimmed through it. People used to use simple labels, like race, gender, religion. But now people are going about using all sorts of things no one’s ever heard of before. It almost feels like they’re going out of their way to find labels that fit them, instead of knowing of labels and going, “Oh yeah, I’m that.” They’re going, “I’m _______, time to find out if there’s a label for that.”
-
But i don’t understand why it would be so bad to stumble upon a label that fits you?
I personally don’t like to label myself. I’ve took up a lot of time and energy trying to find out what category I fit in, and even the idea of wondering if there was a word out there tha lt fit the description of me giving up on labels and not really following them. And it came to the point where I finally didn’t care to find that certain label that fits what I feel- until recently when I stumbled upon a video talking about pomosexual. Even then, the word could be used as a label or just a definition on its own. Because it’s sorta silly to have a label saying it doesn’t believe in labels.
We live in a more complex spectrum in life right now. It’s more than just religion and the norm, and I think people have a right to express whatever they want. -
(ok this is off-topic but uh how tf is that person cisgendered AND non-binary?? i think someone should explain to them what cisgendered means-)

Yeah, but people are acting like their labels are the only reason why they’re valid? Labels don’t make you better than the next person, but people are acting like they do
-
yeah that's true
-
No, they don’t make one better than another, but some people seek shelter underneath them for security. And I believe that’s valid. Not everyone is the same, and not everyone is secure about their identity.
What you think doesn’t matter or isn’t a big deal could be for someone else, and it’s just common decency to respect someone and what they want to refer as. -
No no, I’m not saying I don’t respect people that go by labels. I’m saying that, personally, I’ve seen people saying that labels make them feel more valid.
Labels shouldn’t be the only reason you love yourself and believe that you are just as valid as everyone else, no matter your labels or someone else’s labels. -
Oh okay.
It’s unfortunate but that’s how it is.
