Thread Topic: Anyone else have a problem w/impulse purchasing?

I keep finding myself scrolling through online shops and looking for things I really don't need. I've fortunately been able to convince myself to put some money in savings, but I've spent way more than I should over these past few months of quarantine. And I'm too embarrassed to tell my therapist--
Just curious to know if any of you experience this & have any tips? -
you should really talk to your therapist. I promise they've dealt with more embarrassing issues. if it's gotten to the point where it is a legitimate problem you need to tell someone. your therapist won't judge you and can offer some alternate coping mechanisms so you don't end up buying more
-
Never, I was never privileged with that option w/ my $$$ reality
-
I can't say that I have, since I've always been a saver, not a spender.
I'd budget everything out (if you haven't done that). -
I've had that problem. So look at the item and think, "Do I need this? What will I use it for? Where will I put it?"
If you can't come up with a satisfactory answer, don't buy it. Of course, it's nice to indulge once in a while, but that's the point: Once in a while. -
I'll bring it up during our next appointment. Hopefully I won't miss half of the appointment this time. 😅
I'm sorry to hear that.
I've tried budgeting, I managed to do it my last deposit, but I guess I'm just getting really antsy with the whole quarantine stuff.
The problem with that is that I somehow always find a way to justify it in the moment.. 😠I will try to force myself to either come up with a satisfactory answer or drop it, though.
Thank you guys for responding -
Idk what all if y'all are talking about, I've had this problem since I started making money. It's not an easy impulsive habit to overcome- I still haven't. I really do agree with Lucky, you should discuss it with your therapist. It has to do with instant gratification and whatnot. Hurting yourself in the long term for momentary happy chemicals.
It's funny to joke about. People say they have shopping addictions all the time.. But at a certain point it stops being funny and starts being a crippling issue that can literally destroy your life. It's best to get a handle on it while you're still financially safe (ie living with your parents). I recommend turning your card off in your backs website, and putting it in a secure place. That's what I hzve to do with my savings, otherwise I WILL spend it all.
And hey y'all congrats on not struggling with this but maybe don't bag about it to someone who is? -
*brag lol

Being an adult definitely sucks. Having money and trying to be wise about it is difficult.
-
I have that issue - it especially loves to present itself when I'm feeling down lol. Just "ooh I'll buy this as a little cheer me up" even though it doesn't really help. Through quarantine my spending habits were also a lot worse and I've definitely picked up some bad spending habits from then lol
I'm not sure if this will help, but you could consider locking your cards so you're unable to use them and only unlock them when you need to make necessary purchases.
You could also set restrictions to yourself for how many treats or hobby purchases you make a month and set goals that you have to complete before you make these purchases. I think that way maybe when you tell yourself "oh but I'm buying this because... ___" you can ask yourself if you have completed you goals first, and if you're going beyond your restrictions.
I'd definitely suggest also speaking to your therapist about it, though. -
@B (I think that's what you're called): I'm sorry. She asked, I answered.

Is there a way to lock cards just to keep one from spending? Or do you mean physically? (I only just got this card this year, I don't really know how they work).
For the record, Tat, I'm very grateful you shared a response. Budgeting is indeed a good coping skill that I need to work on. -
i did but i only bought random stuff at the dollar store
-
I do that too :') it's why I try not to go there with my mom anymore
I could spend $50 on just pokemon cards there -
i'v bought the shoddy tools multiple times just cause "it might be good"
