I don't know. I know what it is, but I'm confused to how it works.

You can get a simple basis on what it could be in the mental disorder's name. Think of Multiple Personality, if you gives you a clear idea on what it could be all about.
It is a mental disorder that could also be known as "Dissociative Personality Disorder" and I would say it is one that is really interesting to dig through.
You can find many resources and websites about them, even try and find people that have been affected by the disorder.
This is a great one:
Search on Youtube, find videos, they could be really helpful. But the main idea of it is that it is a mental disorder that is usually caused by past trauma and over a specific long period of time, it can start to affect the person and they start to disassociate themselves from the events that cause the trauma. They can develop personalities or according to this second source they can be alters that are completely unaware of what's going on and can even help the person cope, but it does drag on with debilitating components like depression, suicidal thoughts, confusion, anxiety, and even going through many doses of alcohol and abusing substances(drugs). -

Gotta agree with 1714 here.
The thing with multiple personality disorder is though, most of the time there isn't actually multiple personalities. Most of the time, it manifests as a person dissociating themselves from abuse or trauma; which basically just means they think the abuse is happening to someone else while they themselves are perfectly fine. If this continues, they may come to think of themselves as two separate people, but usually not.
The best treatment for something like this is just therapy to try and get the patient to stop distancing themselves from reality. Granted, if the source of the abuse is targeted as well, they'll just relapse, but that goes without saying. Unlike most other mental illnesses, DPD cannot be cured with medication, as it's not caused by a chemical imbalance.
In extreme cases, there may be two distinct personalities a person has, but this is usually just hollywood magic and actually quite rare.
Also, Le1f, please use proper spelling. Please. The time you saved removing two letters cannot be that important, and clear communication is the heart of discourse. -

Why must you lie like this, Le1f? I mean, sure, I've told some large lies here myself, but you can't honestly expect me to believe that, right?

Okay, I see.
How would I be able to help someone with MPD? Like, this person distances themselves away from help. How would I, as just one, be able to help someone like this?
I'm doing this for a class. That's why I'm asking.
