Thread Topic: What's the point of a kids therapist

If they just spend months trying to get to know you.
>Kids trying to kill themself//Depressed
>>Trying to know you instead of giving advice
I mean, I had a therapist that I had to go to every Friday. Everytime I went She would just talk about her life.
A lot of my friends have talked about that too.
Does anyone know why they do this? -
Maybe because they can't help you if they don't know you. Talking about themselves won't help though. Maybe they are trying to get you to open up by doing that.

because they are fakes i had to take one every thursday

I'm guessing that they maybe think that depressed kids need a friend, so the therapist has conversations with the kid that they'd have with a friend. That, or they are trying to make you open up and be more comfortable around them so they can actually help you.
Idk, Cheese is just guessing. -
Just a quick side note, but what sort of advice do you think someone should give to a person with depression, or one who wants to kill themselves?
I'm no psychologist, but I'd assume a proper diagnosis requires a rather specialized mental screening. It's not like you can just plug a person into a machine and find out if they're truly depressed or not. You need to get into their head, find out their opinions on things, things of that matter.
And then, once you've determined if someone truly is depressed, you need to find out why. You need to begin healing their shattered physique. Psychology is not an exact science, it requires a slow, careful hand.
Of course, I am just talking out of my ass, if someone actually does know, I'd like to hear it. -
What sade is talking about is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is an extended treatment (months to years) in which a relationship is built up between the therapist and the patient. The relationship is then used to explore aspects of a person's past in great depth and to show how these have led to the current depression. Understanding this link between past and present - insight - is thought to resolve the depression and to make a person less vulnerable to becoming depressed again.
