The original song went like:

Ashes, ashes.
We all fall dead.
They changed it to down to make it "happier."
I know what it means.
Ring around the rosy! That is a rose color rash.
Pocket full of posy! That is stuff that "prevents" rosy.
Ashes! Ashes! That is describing how the corpses would be burnt to ashes.
We all fall dead/down. That basically says that they are dead. -
