This wasn't recent, but here's some old news that I was thinking about just recently.
One night, it was really cold. As in ice and way below freezing outside.
At 4 in the morning I was sleeping in the living room, when something begins thumping the door and I hear someone outside. So I go to check.
At first, I thought it was my neighbor, since he does things like this. Nope. It was a homeless guy who was almost naked.
So I let him in, the guy looked like he was on drugs, but it could have been the cold. He tried to talk but it wasn't coherent.
I gave him a blanket to put on and went to make him something warm to eat, but then my mom came down. She was pissed and called the cops, who came and took him away.
She then told me never to let anyone in again. But the guy looked like he was about to die. I couldn't just let him die on the porch.
So someday, I'm probably going to get killed by a random stranger I tried to help. But damn it, that guy survived because of me. I think it will be worth it if my cause of death is "being a decent human being." -

Good work, Appa. I know your mom is being careful and trying to protect you, but she's not going to be the one that changed someone's life for the better. That'll be you.
of course if you ever get killed I'm going to feel so guilty for having said this so please exercise just a hint of caution while doing your good deeds -
You assessed the danger level because you knew he might be on drugs.
And when you realised the only danger was towards him you helped him.
You did the right thing, this is the atitude needed to improve the planet and the people on it.
