Thread Topic: Is there anything good about humanity?

I cannot shake the feeling that the impact of humans on the Earth and on each other is a completely negative one. I'm completely disgusted by the level of selfishness and apathy towards others that I see from my fellow humans. So many people are content to become rich and fat as the rest of the world to choked off. We gorge ourselves and stuff our faces with food as thousands starve everyday. We spend money on giant houses, cars, mobile homes, flat screen Tvs, and all sorts of other things we don't need when we could be using that money to help others. We think religion will provide some kind of moral instruction to humanity, but all it has done is give humans one more reason to hate and kill each other.
So I have to wonder if humans are really worth the time and the effort, if helping others is worth it. Does it matter if we can help a kid escape poverty if he'll just end up ignoring human misery like the rest of us and turn to petty self-absorbtion? Is it part of our nature to want to help each other? From everything I see, I don't think it is. So really, it probably isn't worth trying to help your fellow man, because your fellow man will most likely not pay it forward. Any difference you try to make on your own will be miniscule in the end. -
That's unfortunately true. :\
Though I think that even if it is miniscule, a little help will still go a long way- as corny as that sounds. -
Tongue, I don't know if you're still here, but have you ever heard the starfish story?
-
I have not.
-
While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.
He came closer still and called out, "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
The old man smiled, and said, "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I dont throw them in, theyll die."
Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, "But, young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You cant possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one." -
The point of the story is that helping people may not affect humanity as a whole. It may not even help humanity at all. But for the people you help, it makes all the difference in the world. So if you're looking for anything good in humanity, don't look at the bigger picture. You wont find anything there. Look at the random acts of kindness you see everyday. That's where the difference is made. That's where the goodness of humanity lies.

Never was a big fan of humans, but hey. -
dw1996 NewbieHumanity is basically good, but we become corrupted over time.

Infinity NewbieAw.. I like that story. First time I heard it.
I think it is where you are and with who you are with that makes a difference. Have you ever been helped in that way. The nicest thing anyone did for me came from a total stranger. I never met them or knew their name. No, I am not talking about a religious matter like a sign or something. This person changed me with a gesture.
Yeah, it's complicated. -
