Why are we walking out? We are demanding the following things from the BC Provincial Government for the public education system:
We care about our teachers. Teachers have had to deal with increasingly difficult working conditions such as overcrowded classrooms, the lowest wages in Canada, and decreased amount of support from the government. We want the government to negotiate in good faith and respect the process of collective bargaining for all working people instead of legislating agreements/contracts.
We care about public education. IN the past decade, there have been 194 school closures and districts have experienced over $300 million of funding cuts a year. We want funding cuts to stop and funding to return to our public education. We want our government to recognize that education, teachers, and students must be respected.
WHAT AFFECTS TEACHERS AFFECTS US.
WE WANT OUR VOICES TO BE HEARD.
STUDENTS TAKE ACTION.
*This is not skipping school. This is standing up for our education.*
The Job Action is causing tension and pressure between the government and the Teacher's Union. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, February 28th and Wednesday, February 29th, the union will be voting whether or not to have a teacher walkout.
Now is the time to demand fair negotiations from the government. The goverment has cut out too much funding and will not budge, and will instead just throw a contract at the teachers, forcing them to work at their already low wages, with large class sizes and outdated material. If the message comes from students from all over BC, this will be a powerful milestone in creating change in our educational system. Students have a voice that is almost completely unheard. We, as youth, can send a strong message to the government by standing up and walking out of class. -
