Thread Topic: Obama wants to raise taxes on the rich

tongue AdvancedIt's a good, common sense idea, so naturally it has no place in our current political debate. The rich are basically untouchable at this point, whether it be through political contributions or the euthemistic media slang "job-creator".

It won't get through the Republican House. But the policy has high public approval. I guess Obama figures if he can't get it passed, he's going to use it as a campaign issue next year.
Obama does have some leverage, though. Afterall, the Bush tax cuts are going to expire soon unless renewed. Obama could threaten to veto their renewal unless there is a compromise. -
I think the main problem in the tax code is that capital gains are taxed at 15%. Most of the super-rich get nearly all their income in the form of capital gains, so that's the rate they pay. It's a lower tax rate than a lot of middle class Americans pay. That's not fair.
-
tongue AdvancedThese are all good points.

I think it's dumb to tax people more. Problems would be solved with a cut in government spending.
-
tongue AdvancedI agree with your second statement TR. We need to cut the military budget in half and eliminate subsidies to oil and coal, and subsidies to Big Agriculture. But the rich really are not taxed at a fair rate, especially when the loopholes and deductions set in.

I think it's a good idea, they have a lot of money and cutting their tax wouldn't be fair to those who can't afford it...a certain idiotic governor doesn't get it.
-
tongue AdvancedWhich idiotic governor would that be?
