Thread Topic: Drinking age

johninMI NewbieI'm not really sure about this one. On the one hand, drinking is the only thing you can't do at 18. But raising the drinking age to 21 has saved lives. So I guess I'm leaning towards 21. What do you guys think?
-
18. Why? Because I said so.

By making something 'illegal' you are only increasing the thrill factor of doing it. This can be seen in over eating, smoking, drinking, and drug use. If someone actually gets a thrill out of doing it, that's when it becomes an addiction and they do it in excess.
My entire life I have never been denied a drink, sweet food, cigarette, or drug. I've always been told if I'm going to try something to try it at home first. With that beig said, I have never smoked, never done drugs, rarely drink, and am under weight. If you take out the thrill of making something difficult to get, you take out the motivation to do it. I think the drinking age should be abolished and that liquor should be sold like any other drink. Because unless you have a reason to think something is special, you're not going to treat it that way. -
goddamnit i was about to say that bobicles,
but you worded it better ^^ -
Eighteen. Why? Because a good amount of soldiers join the army before twenty-one, and I think that they should legally be allowed to drink before going into war :P
But then again, Bob has a good point.
I haven't researched whether or not it's true, but my parents told me that in other countries, they don't have as many alcholics or drinking problems because it's all legal. And like Bob said, people lose the thrill and won't overdo any of it. -
tongue AdvancedJust addressing the notion that 21 saves lives: In the same time that the legal drinking age has been 21, most states have enacted laws requiring drivers to wear seat belts. So the statistic may be a little skewed.

18, u can do anything else, y not booze?
-
18 because I don't wanna wait three more years.
-
18, Agreed with Pyro. I just have to (Hopefully) wait 7 years -_-
-
21. i don't think 18 year olds are responsible enough. they're still too young and they seek the thrill of getting drunk. my cousin almost died of alcohol poisoning when he was 18. so i say 21. definitely 21.

If there was no drinking age at all, there would be no "thrill" of getting drunk.
-
johninMI NewbieThere would also be 12-year-olds getting drunk and nobody could stop them. There would still be plenty of thrill in getting drunk. People older than 21 are as likely to drink to excess as anyone else.

Have you ever drank John? Before you ever even get drunk, you have to go through the Buzz phase. You get really tired or headachey and your body makes you not want to drink anymore. The only reason people keep drinking is because they've gotten used to the idea of it being forbidden. Even as you get older and drinking becomes legal, you still go off of the idea that you developed in your mind. It becomes a habit at that point.
Alcoholics are usually either people who are very stressed out, or people who at a young age had to hide it every time they drank. They became addicted to the idea of drinking, not the drink. I had my first drink at a very young age and have never had it denied to me. Now consider that I have never been drunk before and I only drink on rare occasion. It isnt an excitement to me and I personally dont enjoy drinking is large quantities. -
Might as well make it 18,since no one really listens to the 21 law anymore.
-
johninMI NewbieThat's just you Bob. For every kid like you who doesn't care, there will be another person who will develop a drinking problem before they are even out of high school if there is no drinking age.
