School uniforms
Thread Topic: School uniforms

So, I was talking to my dad the other day about uniform policies at my school, about how one of the deputy principals was being (in my opinion) rude to one of the kids. I was waiting with my friend to get her tuckshop, and this kid was in the line behind us wearing a hoodie. The only place you can buy my school’s uniform is outside the school, and there is a school jacket you’re supposed to wear (this is pretty standard for public schools). The deputy principal, for whatever reason,

(Oops that sent before I was ready-)
… for whatever reason, walked over and started full on yelling at this kid for wearing a hoodie (it was a black hoodie, so resembled our school jacket pretty close). This kid had a valid uniform pass, but the deputy didn’t listen and with freaking calling out this kid in front of everyone. It was 20 degrees, pretty cold for where I live, but he ended up taking the hoodie. This, in my opinion, was pretty weird. I used to get yelled at at my old school for wearing hair ties on my wrist. I think it’s strange how kids get such harsh punishments for not following uniform policies (which most are pretty unreasonable, eg not being able to have white shoelaces). My dad’s reason for not being able to wear free dress, like in schools in America, was because everything would turn into a popularity contest. Like, if you weren’t wearing the latest clothes, you’d be bullied. My old school had free dress days from time to time for fundraisers, but I never experienced this. What do y’all think about uniform policies? Do you like uniforms are unnecessary, or policies should at least be relaxed? -
I definitely think that school uniforms are necessary. But school uniforms should only be clothes you wear, not hair ties or bracelets you put in your wrists.
Sure rules should be respected but the deputy had no right to yell at the kid like that, totally unnecessary. Besides it was cold, so there should've been some kind of tolerating.
I think school uniforms are necessary because they were made to make students feel & look equal. Think about the kids who might not have the luxury of buying good clothes let alone brand expensive ones.
Not having a school uniform would bring a lot of chaos because then dress codes would be necessary, this is when the specific length and strap thickness rules come. Why have 30 rules about what to wear instead of just having one?
I totally agrew with what your father said. This is just how society works.
School uniforms make our lives easier anyway. Having to pick an outfit everyday at 7am. Having to think about what you're gonna wear tomorrow instead of focusing on studying, the actual reason we go to school for.
I honestly feel bad about americans for complicating their students and their own lives by not having school uniforms. -
i don't see much necessity in school uniforms, and this is coming from someone who's never attended a school that enforced uniforms.
i personally really like fashion, and i would absolutely hate to wear the same thing every day. i've never seen any problems before at school with free dress, for the most part no one cares. most people wear comfy clothes to school anyways, such pajamas/sweats/hoodies.
it might just be the schools i attended, but i've never seen free dress turn into a popularity contest/cause bullying. that sounds almost like it's from a movie, to be honest. i think that it really depends on the person though, some would prefer to wear school uniforms and some prefer not to. i enjoy seeing the diversity and what people choose to wear. i used to attend a high school where a good handful of people had really crazy/cool fashion, and i loved to see how people expressed themselves. -
i personally think having a school uniform enforced, while some people might think that it’s great bc oH iTs So aEsThEtIc- or great, i don’t have to deal with picking out clothes in the morning and struggling to decide of what to wear, it’s honestly not great, especially for people who are into fashion or their clothing it their form of self expression.
now, dress codes? those are pretty necessary- there are some schools that i know have like, extremely strict dress codes, which sucks and i hate that ppl have to deal with them, but obviously some of the rules are necessary. but like, when you go into details like tank top strap width or shorts or skirt length, it’s kinda not fun-
i just think the teachers should not be able to tell us when we can and can’t wear. if our parents let us wear it out of the house, it should be fine lmfaooo -
Respectfully, I think yall can live without expressing yourselves through fashion in schools (just in schools). These days, in most cases, "fashion" is used as an excuse to undress. Do whatever you want but at least keep it outside of schools - education systems where the main focus should be learning. And again I'd like to remind yall to think about those who may not have the money to afford nice things.
As for the popularity contest/bullying I can already see students 'competing' through nice, expensive shoes, in schools where uniforms are obligatory, so like one of you mentioned it might just be the schools you attended.
Coming from someone who's also into fashion (to a certain degree) and attended schools where uniforms were mandatory her whole life (currently in high school, still have to wear them). -
I'm not saying school uniforms are perfect (I don't even like my school's uniform) but they are the best option right now, factually proven.

i've actually been talking to a couple other people and they agree that it's not normal for others to bully you for not having as "nice/expensive" of clothes. like it's really not common for that to happen from what me and others have seen, at least. almost everyone at public schools, at least in america, just show up wearing sweats/pajamas/etc. most people really don't care what others are wearing, bullying mainly centers around other things.
and fashion is one of my biggest hobbies, so i actually am very grateful for having free dress. i feel better when i look better, and put thought into how i dress. not to mention that school takes up a biggg portion of our time, so yes i do enjoy to wear cool outfits, and it would be boring to wear the same uniform every single day.
imo, it's really not much of a big deal. i don't think uniforms are necessary. mean kids will find a way to bully you no matter what. unfortunately, that's part of school. but for the most part, the majority of kids in free dress schools just opt to be cozy. i like having that option as well. -
Thanks for all your opinions :)
I think uniforms aren’t bad, I think they’re okay, but for me there hasn’t really been a worthwhile purpose to them. Like you can go thrifting or to a local dollar store for clothes, and for people who aren’t well off it’s easier than buying uniforms every year (especially because at my school, uniforms change frequently). But when it gets to the point kids are getting a detention for wearing hair ties on their wrists, bracelets, a certain type of earring, etc, free dress is going to be better. But then again, dress codes in America I hear aren’t good -
Yes bullying might not be very common but I've listed many other reasons that are much more important and common. About the part where you said "I feel better when I look better" I've noticed that on myself too. It's not a good thing, we have to learn to feel our best even when we don't look our best. We have to work on disconnecting the way we feel from outside factors like looks, social status etc. and school uniforms would kind of be helping in this case lol.
As for the bracelets, hair ties and stuff, on schools I went to, they were never a problem. Certain types of earrings yes, they aren't allowed, which is reasonable, no big deal and the teachers never paid attention to these anyway. Getting detention for hair ties on wrists, that's ridiculous. -
i've been to schools both with and without uniforms. the only plus side i can think to a school uniform being that the students mostly look the same. but at an age where self-discovery and self-expression are a crucial part of one's social & mental development, school uniforms can stifle that. sure wearing a uniform can teach you to be part of a team, but isn't it uncanny seeing all the students look the same, like a flock of animals? i might argue it points to a larger problem of the american government teaching us to be obedient early
-
the healthiest way to explore self expression is with your peers, and you won't get that in a better place than school or school-related activities. sure i do agree we don't need to be showing off our stomach, legs, chest, etc. and that's what a dress code is for. but completely limiting their choice in appearance may or may not teach them to place self worth in how obedient they are
-
I agree with br0wnie. school is where you get to show your peers who you are, and your clothes can say a lot about that. you can find people like you just by how the dress, and if you graduate from all schools with just uniforms, how are you going to learn how to properly express and dress yourself for work? idk its just a hot take. there are perks to school uniforms like spotting imposters (yes I'm using that word) that could be potentially dangerous. it could also reduce brainpower and reduce distractions.
-
i live in america and go to a school with no uniforms but a strict dress code aimed mostly at girls here is my opinion in a list
pros
-clothing is not a distraction
- you get ready faster
-it takes attention away from latest trends at school
-it can prevent bullying due to school
-no dress coding
con
-they can be expensive
-it can deter creativity
-it can be gendered and make ppl uncomfortable or want the opposite gendered uniform (only in mixed schools)
tips
-they could have a dress code aimed at any gender
-they can allow accessories to add creativity but have a uniform to take focus away from clothing
-comlex dress codes aren't needed just ones to say cover your body and stomach -
i personally am anti-uniform but pro dress code for people to cover their body
