I think, perhaps, taking your information regarding anything not directly related to religion from a blatantly religious site is a mistake. Upon conducting my own research, I'm leaning more toward this being a perfectly standard medical procedure. I could be wrong, if I've missed something here please do let me know, but it seems to me like this is only used when it's medically necessary, for miscarriages, or when the fetus has developed a condition that makes the pregnancy unfeasible. It's sometimes a preferred method of terminating a wanted pregnancy wherein the fetus would not have been able to survive because it keeps the remains intact for viewing and closure.

That is a relief to hear but since there's things like "post birth abortion" I wouldn't be too surprised if there are cases where this was used in a non necessary manner

And yeah as road said, this was never done "just because," only when absolutely necessary. Contrary to what many pro-lifers seem to think, nobody is performing abortions for fun
