I feel like social media is good for sharing and discussing things you like. You can share your passions and get guidance on them from like-minded people. Whatever you like you can find a community that will support you, and watch content you enjoy.
But there's also the dark side. Predators hang out on social media platforms, pretending to be teenagers for whatever sick reason. Some people are jerks and now have an easier way to bully and harass someone anonymously. Teens base their self worth of their likes and follows, and edit themselves so much, they don't look like themselves. People's view of their bodies worsen as they see other people on the internet. People are tricked and deceived, and do dumb things to gain popularity. On Tiktok there are a lot of dangerous challenges, such as the blackout challenge, and the milk crate challenge (I don't know what it is really called) where people climb large towers of those wobbly milk crates, and most of the time, fall.
Genuinely I think social media would be better if some of the moderation was better. Not allowing dangerous challenges to thrive and gain popularity on platforms, would rid of one problem, but not all of them. Social media can be good, but it has a lot of flaws as of now.
On the topic of cancel culture it is ridiculous. Apparently at one point in time, someone tried to cancel Quackity for speaking his first language, Spanish, and said it wasn't 'his language to speak.' Content creators can't do anything without someone pulling clips from 5 years ago, and trying to cancel them from it. I also remember this one user on an art website 'fixing' people's characters by giving them more hair, making them have more weight, and changing their race, and then calling the original creator racist for not being more 'inclusive.' People at one point tried to cancel Badboyhalo, of all people! But literally no content creator is safe. I understand some content creators should be canceled, and do do terrible things, that the victims need justice for. But people seem so desperate to cancel someone nowadays, they find the dumbest reasons and blow it out of proportion.
Anyways sorry for ranting, that's just my thoughts. :) -
I can understand "cancelling" someone for being a predator, or a scumbag, or whatever, but f---ing
some of these people did nothing wrong
or the things they supposedly did happened before some of these platforms f---ing existed. It's pointless.
Also, that art fixer... "Zeena hates fatphobia", right? yeah they can go throw themselves into an active volcano. IF for nothing else, claiming they "Fixed" people's art is literally the one of, if not most pretentious things you can do.
Cancel culture is effectively just a way for Virtue-signaling scumbags to make other people's lives hell, even if that person is completely innocent. And again, it's not all bad, but.... UGH it's so annoying.
Like I could stream me playing a game, and then try to do an impression of a british or some other non-american accent, I ASSURE YOU that some 400 lb. virtue-signaling dips--- is gonna call me racist and try to ruin my life. -
In research, social media has flagged concerns about the negative mental health effects from high levels of social media use. Complimenting this negative phenomena is the rise of short form media. Long form content is diminishing & being replaced by TikTok & shorts. This is causing serious impairment of the dopamine systems in our brain and while it's not technically an addiction, easily impacts the neuroplasticity of your mind making it easier & easier for you to get your "fix" of pleasure & the feeling of accomplishment.
This is by design. Social media companies have admitted to designing their technology from every angle to keep you hooked to it. This is also especially damaging to people with ADHD or other neurodivergencies who are more susceptible to dopamine imbalances. Unfortunately the side effects don't end with social media. The use of dopamine creates byproduct chemicals in your mind that can make it difficult for you to focus on accomplish other things once your screen is off.
There's a lot more to be said about it's impact on mental health, relationship health, other addictions & political propaganda but I could write a book about that.
Tldr; technology is inherently neutral, but people are selfish and as a result we have negative consequences as a result that won't be fully understood for another hundred years or so. Technology can be useful, but if you feel like social media is "hacking" your brain you should consider downloading a productivity widget & using other sanitizing habits to help with social media addiction -
I think if we don’t cancel culture culture will cancel us

I honestly think Social Media is a contradicting place. Sometimes it's really horrible and sometimes it's good. Just depends on who you are, what other people think of you, and how those other people are feeling.
-
I feel like social media can go either way. It mostly depends on what people you encounter and if they are who they say they are. It’s a make it or break it type of thing.
-
Also, what’s cancel culture?
-
Simple explanation:
if you've ever heard like "[insert person here] is cancelled", that means they either did something horrible (that was made publicly known) or pissed someone (or multiple people) off and caused a massive riot somehow.
Example of the second situation: Croaket, a TikTok artist who got harassed and (I think maybe even doxxed?) because people didn't like their art style (because the eyes were a bit high up on the head and the ears low down.)
I'm not gonna get into the Croaket thing (unless you wanna know more) -
What’s wrong with the eyes being high up and the ears down low? If that’s their art style then that’s that. They shouldn’t have been harassed for something like that-

Some people have different feeling about tho and they’re thee culture cancelers
