  If marriage were solely a religious thing, it wouldn't matter at all. It would just be a cute little sentiment. Marriage, however, has become a legal institution that is necessary for people to have a lot of the rights they should as a couple. We can't refuse people their rights because it's against our religion. That's bulls---.
