First of all, this isn't meant to be about feminism. Inevitably my ultimate message will be drowned out by another argument about feminism. So be it.
This is something I saw someone write on Facebook. Personally I think it represents everything wrong with political opinion and public discourse in this country. The facts simply don't matter. How do you use statistics to lie? Numbers are not debatable. And again, this isn't about feminism, any other label can take its place in that sentence. It seems like a fairly regular occurrence for Republicans or their minions at Fox News to wipe their ass with the facts and say "liberals just use statistics to lie". I'm sure you can find liberals who say the same thing about the other side. And this is what is wrong with our country more than anything right now. Facts don't matter, only opinions, even opinions that are complete bulls---. It completely impedes progress and problem-solving when our leaders are constantly at war over ideology and ignore evidence and facts in their policy and decision-making. And we have to own a piece of that. It isn't enough to shake your fist and say "the government is f---ed up, they can't get anything done". But we're the ones who vote for them and believe their lies, they derive their power from us.
I really don't know what solution to offer. Frankly this is not a new development. I can only hope that as my generation grows older and gets more of a voice that this country will have rational leadership and intelligent public discourse again. But for the foreseeable future I'm not holding out any hope for a return to reason. At least for now, the idiots rule. -
I disagree. Numbers don't lie but all facts can be misrepresented. I think saying someone uses statistics to lie is a little dramatic but essentially just calling out bulls--- on the grounds of post hoc. Which really, is fair enough. Logical fallacy is logical fallacy
