Technique : Enconchado
Function : It is symbol of creolization, or syncretism, in artistic traditions. The
painting depicts usage of western and eastern artistic technique for
example luminosity of the original work(created during the end of
Renaissance) and ornate frames of Japanese tradition
Context : At the beginning of 17th century, New Spain and Japan attempted to form
a trade alliance however it was thwarted and soon importation of Japanese good decreased by the second half of the 17th century. This is one of the reason behind the creation of enconchado technique(to fulfil the local demands of Asian inspired goods), which consists tiny fragments of mother-of-pearl onto a wooden support or a canvas
Descriptive Terms : Shiny, bright, brilliant, cheerful, monotonous
Meaning : Unlike in the original painting, an eagle is beneath the feet of the subject
instead of an angel which symbolizes creolization of the cult of Virgin of
Guadalupe. Gonzalez's own cultural adaptation of the original piece
shows the sense of local identity as evidenced by the four roundels
surrounding the subject. -
