It is important to start off light. You don't want your work to look messy. Prismacolors are softer than regular color pencils and they are made to blend. In order to have well-done blending, you need to start off light. Also, understand that prismacolors are not like color pencils at all. Most people use them like regular color pencils. xD
Take your time. Go over the same area with the same pressure. You'll soon realize that it gets darker as you go over and add more layers with the same pressure. Not too hard.
Using complementary colors darken a color. Don't use black. Black isn't a color.
How to make black?
Making your own black is better than using the black prismacolor. It gives it more life, in a way, and it looks way better. There are many ways to make a dark color close to black. I use the ones listed in the picture.
