Assigned to preach in Quebec, mastered native languages
founded mission at Sault Sainte-Marie
sent to Ottawa
helped Ottawa & Huron Indians retreat from Sioux
1671: met Louis Joliet
heard rumors of river located somewhere in west
Marquette + Joliet tried to find river, attempt halted by tribal warfare
1673: Count Frontenac (Gov. of New France) feared Spanish capture if they moved ahead
Established French claim of Mississippi Valley
continued Missionary work
left written account of journey
died at 38, in 1675 -
