I sat alone on a swing at school during recess. I'd done this every day as long as I could get on the swings. I'd watch the other kids. Some of the boys would play basketball. Some of the girls would play jump rope or double dutch. Their laughing and yelling was a distant sound to me. I kicked a bit of the bark dust with my right foot, looking at the ground.

Some boy was talking to me. I guessed, by his voice, that he was a few years older than I. It was odd that I could tell that, when I spent so much time in silence and isolation. I didn't look up at him, though. I acted as if I hadn't heard him.
