But why would they have to get it every year? The vaccine stays in your system. Why is it that if we've already found the vaccine, that it still exists? Wouldnt it die without a host?
The reason we have to get a new vaccine every year is because the flu virus mutates. It changes and it adapts to overcome the vaccines we have in place against it. The flu evolves every year. That's all evolution is. Evolution is the slight and subtle mutations of a species. These mutations occur on the atomic level.
You see, human DNA is broken down into cromosomes. Each cromosome is a combinatioin of 3 distinctive protiens which are processed by the cell to determine different variations in the organism as a whole. A mutation is a differenciation in that cromosomal sequence. Mutations can be good, or bad, or not really effect the organism at all. Evolution is when that mutations becomes permanant. It is when that organims can reproduce and share its genetic code with more of its species. The reason we see adaptations is simply because the mutations that help the animal mean that the animal will live longer, and therefore produce more offspring.
Evolution is simply what happens when genetic drift, natural selection, and genetic mutation, all come together to form an inproved species over time. -
