Yeah that's the purpose, though a lot of people claim it's to "protect children from harmful views and beliefs" which is utter bs- also fun fact the alarming majority of banned books are from women (I have the top 52 most banned books in my state and pretty much all of them are by women and queer folk so thats fun)
Literally, like what's the goal- a lot of the time public libraries don't have the books either (*cough* Magnus motherf---ing Chase, Song of Achilles, All Boys Aren't Blue, and Beyond Magenta not being in my public library even though they're popular, award winning books *cough*) but there are even bookshops that specifically only carry banned books or have an entire shelf/section on them purely so that people don't have to look too hard to find them
Ik it's amazing
also again that's not even including the required reading classrooms have- like dude if students want to read these books let them read it, especially since our schools have really bad reading levels because how are we supposed to learn how to read when all the books are slowly getting removed from our libraries?? -
Yeah no that’s so dumb- for the “land of freedom” that’s not a very freedom-inducing thing to do
I think Australia bans books too but I don’t think it’s a big thing, idk but a bunch of the banned books were either written in the 18-1900s and banned in the 19th-20th century so they’ve just kinda been forgotten about since (that is not sigma wtf america)
Fr like what harm does the PJO series have it’s literally a children’s book about s---ty Greek gods
“It’s horrible that kids aren’t reading as much as they used to” maybe that’s bc you’re banning all the f---ing books- -
Ikr it's so stupid I'm so upset by it- IKR it's so not freedomcore. Ohhhh ok fair
Literally the PJO series is one of the most popular books for a reason. Don't remove it from your libraries. That's how you lose readers, and if you lose readers, you lose books, and if you lose books, you lose tools to empathy, logic, and basic intelligence. Last year my US history teacher had us do the history project and I was talking to him about the top 50 most banned books in the country for my project and he just kept going "So that's why it's not assigned reading anymore..." and it was so sad lmfao -
And rightfully so man that’s so dumb- isn’t that what everyone in the American revolution fought for tho like having the freedom to do s--- they wanted-
Exactly and if people lose basic intelligence then you’ve got an entire country of idiots with no empathy and who think the earth is flat. Damn bro that is not slay -
Literally like wtf man-
LITERALLY like dude just let them read books. Yeah, it's really sad seeing retired teachers and librarians see what books are banned now too, like my grandma's a retired librarian and we went to Barnes and Nobles and it had a whole banned book section and a bunch of classics were there and she just stared at it in shocked silence
Ok but also is he aware that (at least where I'm from) when books are removed from libraries, they have a whole book giveaway after? Like, a few years ago my school had entire crates of books that they gave away for free/very VERY cheap because the library couldn't keep them anymore. Even if they don't do that, a lot of schools donate them to book thrift stores or even to their favorite students. He's basically hosting a whole ass book fair -
That’s so f---ed up-
Damn that’s actually so sad- just let people enjoy their books what’s so hard about that
Yeah no that happens here too- my local library was doing a clear out and there were so many old books that were so good
New conspiracy theory trump wants people to be able to buy books for free/wayyyyy cheaper -
Yeah
Real like it just straight up doesn't make sense. I understand not wanting students to read books that could traumatize them/books that they aren't prepared for, but that's why books have summaries on the back, and why they have trigger warnings. It's up to them (and potentially their parents depending on age) to decide what books they're prepared for
OMG YES THATS AN AMAZING CONSPIRACY -
Fr it’s so dumb. If a book has topics that could traumatise kids, just don’t put them in kid’s sections, easy as that. Aus high schools are years 7-12 and there are smut books in the library because yes why not but they’re labelled “this book has smut or something” so seventh graders don’t read them it’s common sense
THAT MUST BE WHY TRUMP WON (jokes jokes trump is an asshat we don’t like him) -
EXACTLY JUST LABEL THEM- this is why other states are smarter, they have labels so kids aren't stupid and don't accidentally grab a wOaH book (*cough* and they had a maturity level sticker on them in a lot of the libraries which is genius)
Also hot take but the purpose of stories is to show you real world scenarios and a mix of good and bad ways to combat them, removing the books with diversity in them removes scenarios important for everyone that already aren't taught enough
NO WONDER MY ENTIRE EXTENDED FAM LOVES HIM OMGGGGG (he's a silly lil guy) -
EXACTLY- and if they contain adult themes PUT THEM IN THE ADULT SECTION- (exactlyyyy)
No but that shouldn’t be a hot take that’s actually so real- like removing trans people and poc from all books is just gonna give a straight white cis kid a heart attack when they see someone with a skin tone darker than them
REALLL THEYRE ALL JUST BOOKWORMS (he’s a lil goofy) -
LITERALLY although then they have to have a debate about what's considered adult themes (*cough* All Boys Aren't Blue is a very mature book but is considered YA because George wrote it for teenagers and young adults so that others wouldn't make the same mistakes and fall for the same lies that they did)
REAL- especially in a place so full of other straight white cis kids, like I've seen so much wild s--- happen purely because kids are just genuinely so not used to meeting people not like them (I'm talking about kids specifically because they're the most honest about what they see/think and not just straight up mean for the sake of being mean lol)
IM SHOCKED OMGGG (he's so obnoxious I'm tired of hearing his voice tbh like I can't even watch f---ing HOME ALONE 2 without him popping up like dude-) -
True true- maybe anything with smut can just go in the young adult section since teens 16+ are technically young adults- (I look there anyway lmao)
Fr like just spare these poor children the confusion of seeing a brown person and dare I say a man twisting tongues with another man (fr like there are o t h e r people out there not just cis straight white ppls)
ITS SO CLEAR NOW (frrr like dude you’ve had your life okay you’re 78 leave room for other people jeez-) -
Real honestly I would just stick with having maturity labels on it and trigger warnings on it, and having a whole separate aisle for smut and stuff- (real)
LITERALLY like for gods sake let them experience something outside of their own experiences, stop validating living in your own bubble (exactlyyyyy)
(literally like you had multiple chances bro just walk away) -
Yeah that would honestly be best lol. Better than banning books because what is that gonna achieve kids say it with me: oppression and removal of rights
Frrrr like gay and brown ppl aren’t gonna stop existing bc you don’t want them to they’re always gonna exist whether you like it or not so it’s better to teach kids about it than not
(Real like you’ve had your time) -
Literally like banning books does nothing except validate the problem
Literally- dude last christmas-ish Miguire was in Florida bc their cousins live there, and we would call a lot, and her cousins found out I was gay and started asking a bunch of intrusive questions, but not in the "ew you're a f*g lemme make you uncomfortable" way and more of a "I have genuinely never interacted with a human being like this before I'm very curious" way and news flash, they have hardly any representation of queer folks in their books/i think even tv bc of that whole Strange World court case situation but idk for sure (which is kinda silly bc Florida is one of the queerest states but i'm like 99% sure that's bc of DisneyWorld)
